Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Query multiple tables, but not all linked tables

I have a master customer table. I am looking to split some fields relating to literature subscriptions out into another table and have them linked together as a one-to-one link. There are other child tables linked to the master already with both one-to-one and one-to-many relations. I want my users to be able to use the query genie to run simple queries involving more than just the master table. In testing, the problem I'm having is that a simple query containing criteria from two tables ends up searching every table linked to the master. For example:

    QUERY to run:
    (both tables have 150,000 records)
master table only-> Active = Y and regnews = 2007 results in 5300+ records in about 2-3 minutes
If the data is split into two tables
master table-> Active = Y AND subscriptions table ->regnews = 2007 ---- I stopped this after it hit 1 million records and was still counting.

Any way to query using the genies that doesn't result in all child tables being searched? I have done some searching on the board here and I see all kinds of coding and creating temp tables and things like that, but I'm not looking to do those things for every single query my users might think of to run.

Have you tried reversing the tables, Parent is now the child and the child is now the parent?

Am I going to have to do that every time they want to run a query? How is that going affect current indexes?

        tim,

I think he means you would make another set with what is now the child as the main table and the now main table would be the child.

sets take up almost no space.

Not sure that is the way to go yet, but an idea. i dont think he is sure yet either.

I think you may need to post a working copy of you proble up here so it can be studdied. I am sure you will get mote response.

Re: Query multiple tables, but not all linked tables

All right after much work I finally have a file down small enough that shows my issue. My main database is 146000+ (called IND). I have set up a query operation called "active_monster" to query on two fields from two separate tables in the indall.set. When I run the query it seems to search all records from children tables instead of just the two tables containing the fields being searched on. I created another query called "2corp_monster" that does the same thing; both run through about 464000+ records before giving a result. These queries run fairly quickly as there is very little data and only a couple of tables to scan. When we do this on the whole database (which has several more tables in the set and probably a hundred+ other fields) it runs well over a million records and takes way too long to complete. Again, I want to know if there is any easy way to do this using the genies without having to write code for every query or invert the set every time a query needs to be run.
