Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha4 Version8 not recognizing Win XP printers

I recently had some computer issues which compelled me to buy a new one and install XP. My A4 V8 program, which previously, under XP, recognized printers will not recognize them on my new computer.

Has anyone encountered this problem and is there any way to correct it? I really need these printers to work.

    Ken

Sounds like you don't have the a4 print agent running.

Are you starting Alpha 4 by running a4.exe? Look in the right corner of your windows ( next to the clock) and see if a small blue a appears. It's an agent to allow A4 to talk to windows printers..

The a4.exe program should start the winagent and then Alpha 4.

An alternate method is to either run the Alpha4.bat or the alpha_start1.bat

I think you should open a command window - start run cmd - navigate to your A4 program directory and run alpha_start1.bat It only starts the winagent. See if that works first and then trace the problems from there.

I located the Winagent exe file but it won't start because of a missing dll file fm3032d.dll, at least according to the warning message.

I now believe that the problem is not so much winagent but all the dlls that are associated with it. I tracked the first missing dll down on the internet and intalled that only to receive a another message regarding another missing dll. I'm in touch with Alpha software and hopefully they will be able to supply the missing dlls.

Any luck with getting a winagent download? I'm having the same problems. Can't find where to get any downloads from alpha.

                      Rick,

                      Winagent.exe comes with Alpha4 V8. What am I missing?

When I move alpha4v8 to a new machine, winagent quit working. I finally moved a couple of dll's over and it started working again.

I have been seeking an answer to this problem for more than year year and I am glad you found the answer.

But I'm wondering if you could be a little more specific ... "moved a couple of dll's over": which ones? from where, to where?

And, with them in place, what file do you use to start A4?

Pending a better solution, I have been building/updating in A4v8 and printing reports in A5v7. It works, but most unhandily.

This sounds like the typical problem encountered when one COPIES the files to a new machine rather than reinstall it. Reinstalling would very likely solve your problem. When Alpha4v8 is installed, there are many other things installed as well. Some of which are .dll files that the system usually install in your Windows/System32 directory.

Anyhow, I would just reinstall A4v8. Of course, after a back up.
