Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

How to set default values for checkbox control.

I would like to do several things while using a checkbox control in a dialog web page.

#1 - Need to set mutiple items in the checkbox as "checked" as a default when the web page appears.

#2 - Prevent user from changing those values in the checkbox.

#3 - Checkbox needs to be a "real" control (not a label) so that its value(s) can be used in a inserted new record along with other editable controls on the form.

I'm using this scenario to add new users to my security system online. The checkbox control contains the values of the Groups that a person will be assigned to.

    Any help will be appreciated.

In a dialog, as opposed to grid, you can set the choices for a checkbox control, and select the default/initial value. To select multiple choices by default, just separate them with a comma (I believe you have to save it first, then go to "Initial Value").

      Thanks Andrea,
Your response was very helpful for my items #1 and #3. However for my item #2 for preventing user from changing values I am still kind of stumped.

I realize I can cause an expression to disable the control by simply placing "false" in the appropriate property box.
The problem with this is, although the values are initialized properly and the user CAN'T edit it, it also does not allow the values to be part of the update or add scenario.

I am left with the need to trust the user NOT to change the default values if I want the default vaules to be placed in the new record.

Any suggestions for this catch 22?

Can you not just disable the control? Eg set enable expression to 0? That should stop them changing the values!
However if this is just 'for show' couldn't you just use calculated fields that don't link to any field in the database and set the default values in the field rules or with Xbasic in the dialog's Validate event?

Just to add, for some reason I initially thought you meant you don't want them to be able to edit the text of the choices (rather than select different choices than the default), although I don't think it is even possible to do that...

At any rate, if you are indeed using a dialog (as opposed to a grid), then the above should be fine... There is no easy way (without scripting) to set defaults in a grid, on the other hand.

Here's the example from the A5 help: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp..._Component.htm

There is a full example on how to do this in the Web Applications Demo sample database that ships with A5 too....
