Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how to: scripts and functions

i have no backup of the scripts and i wanted to add more scripts and or update existing scripts that is already on the compiled version.

If you deleted all your scripts you will have to create a new aex and just add it next to the other one. Don't delete your scripts & functions UNTIL you export them to a text file using A5's built in utility! And back up, back up, back up!

That's really bad. Alway's backup! Depending upon complexity and certain other settings, I have sometimes reverse engineered an AEX compiled library file, but it is not easy, and would always be a last resort.

Actually, it is. The function below combines a crlf() separated list in "libraries" to an aex called specified in "library" and gives it a lib id # (don't use <10 or >=128 in my experience, but it's not extremely important)
      C COMBINE_LIBRARY(C library,C libraries[,N lib_id])
Combines .AEX libraries into one .AEX library, lib created is lib_num 0-255.

My CSDA Code Utility has a "LibMake" feature that takes care of most AEX library creation issues without changing your current database code.

A new feature, due out soon in the next update, adds a much better front end to the code selection, and also adds the ability to "PACKAGE" specify which code items are suppose to be included in particular library creations. Thus I can specify the which library package(s) to create, and know that all the needed scripts will be included.

There is also a recursive "INCLUDE" for including script code in other scripts (typically for internal functions). This allows keeping a master copy of the code (to maintain it), but have it used as an internal function for some libraries that you create.

And of course, no utility would be any good without a backup, and there are improvements for the next version that backup the web components, and does all the backup in a background thread, allowing you to continue using A5 during the backup. As before, these backups occur, even if the data is currently being shared.

        peter and Ira,

        thank you for the help...

i'll try this when i get home. i just wonder if it can actually overwrite an existing script on the target aex file after combining?

        i hope it will.

        thanks again
