Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Very basic question: getting data from dialog components into a table

    I've made a number of Grids and linked them with great success, but I cannot figure out how to get data from a page made up of Dialog components to submit to a table in the Alpha 5 database I've created.

    Am I correct in assuming there is no easy way, and I need to write a script? Where is the best place to start as far as learning the basics?

    Thanks in advance... Rob

    Have a look at the web application/server samples that come with Alpha 5, there's some dialog examples in there.

      I've dug around in the example pages but many of the dialogs don't seem to have anything in the "after validate" area where I would expect to see the script to tranfer the data to a table? I've certainly seen nothing in any of the examples that appears to be writing any values to a table.

      Does this action have to be scripted or is it a matter of selecting tables and fields somewhere just like setting up a grid?

        Most processing seems to be done in the validate event...

        Scripting, unfortunately, but fairly easily - this is code for saving details of failed emails (if the sending fails from WAS) to a dedicated table:

        Code:
        'Now save to Email Failures table:
        	t = table.open("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\mail_failures.dbf",FILE_RW_SHARED)
        	t.enter_begin()
        	t.Date = Date()
        	t.Time = Time()
        	t.Sender = Sender
        	t.Name = Name
        	t.Email_to = Recipient
        	t.Subject = Subject
        	t.Message = Message

        	t.enter_end(.t.)
        	t.close()

          Hello Rob.
          I recently made a similar enquiry, and received some great help from Forum Members.
          If you give me some further details about your database fields etc, I could point you in the right direction.
          Regards.
          Nick.

            Thanks for the feedback Nick,

            I just need to get the values from a few simple Dialog elements into a cooresponding table.

            I'll try and look you old post up for reference.

            NoeticCC's example seems to show me the basics, I just need to dig into the syntax a bit I guess.

            What are your thoughts on putting the script in the "validate" vs "after validate" section?

              Btw, I do believe officially these things are done in the Aftervalidate event, it was just in some of the WAS examples I found that it was placed in the Validate event :)

                Re: Very basic question: getting data from dialog components into a table

                OK... I used the script below in the "after validate" but can't get the date or hours fields in the database to show data entered in he dialog. I also got the following error first time around:

                Errors in: event.AfterValidate code:
                Data value cannot fit into a numeric field of size
                t.hours subproperty cannot be assigned to

                I made the fields in the table larger and this went away.

                t = table.open("daily data",FILE_RW_SHARED)
                t.enter_begin()
                t.date = date
                t.machine = machine
                t.operator = operator
                t.status_code = status_code
                t.work_order = work_order
                t.hours = hours

                t.enter_end(.t.)
                t.close()

                  Might the date thing be related to this? http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=71687

                    Re: Very basic question: getting data from dialog components into a table

                    I haven't watched or studied all of these messages real closely, but let me remind:

                    Everything on the html page is character type. There are no numeric, date, time types.

                    So, when recording the variable values from a web page to a table, you need to be mindful of any necessary conversion.

                    In a typical situation, a couple lines might look like this:

                    Code:
                    :
                    t.MyDate = ctod(vDate)
                    t.MyNumber = val(vNumber)
                    if vLogicalValue = "True"
                      t.MyLogicalValue = .t.
                    else
                      t.MyLogicalValue = .f.
                    end if
                    :
                    The convert_type() function is also appealing, but I've found it best to use a function that is specific to the conversion type rather than the generic convert_type().
