Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    deployment clarification

hi, im deploying my application for the first time and have read through the files but am a little confused.

i will be running accross a network and have the relevant run time licence

the runtime documentation is pretty straight forward, but then i am reading 'Network Optimisation'

Do i need to do both or will network optimisation occur when i install a bootstrap application and locate the master database from the bootstrap application.

also the documentation for setting up the run time states that i must register

    a5controls.dll and a5contexteval.dll

    during installation.

any ideas on how i do this.

    thnaks

Network Optimization (shadowing) in most network situations, improves overhead on the network as only the data itself goes over the network rather than the forms, field rules etc. If your network bandwidth is never maxed, you will see no real difference. It is optional, and needs to be either configured to happen or done manually at each system. It can be made to happen whenever you update the version number of the database or manually. It needs to be done at each system, every time you want to use the updated version.

I believe this normally happens during the install, but if not you will need to register it to the Windows OS you are using.

Normally you would do a start, run, and then type in

    regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\A5V8\ a5controls.dll"

followed by OK. Then repeat with the other file.

      Re: deployment clarification

      hi ira,

thanks for these, thats clear now.

i am having an issue (prob should post seperatly). i have been using the install maker in alpha 5 and it is telling me that not all of my files are int heosurce directory. this just is not true.

i have downloaded install creator (recommendation form this msg board) and have created an install package, but can see how it has captured the runtime files. so i feel if i try to install on another machine then i will encounter problems.

i am thinking that i would create another install package with a bootstrap applicaiton but not confident that i am right.

i have spent all day on this and surely deploying my application should not be this much trouble.

      any help gratefully received.

      thanks

          Re: deployment clarification

I have managed to create an install package using install maker and have successfully installed it on to the pc acting as a server.

i have tested the programme and mostly seems to be ok, but the one to many relationships are not showing the child records in the embedded browses.

i can add a record, but nothing is showing.

          Any thoughts?

            Richard,

Not familiar with install maker, But maybe can make life a little easier by telling you how I do it.

i use astrum installer. I have 2 install disks, one for the server and one for the workstation(s). If it is installed on a single pc, it still uses both.

I take the workstation copy and put it in a seperate folder from my own copy.(as a note, I do all my work from a workstation so there are no glitches when installed). i insert the bootstrap in the other folder and it is ready to make an install. When I make the install, i get the appropriate registry entries needed. I also make a batch file to run the "regsvr32 "c:\Program Files\A5V8\ a5controls.dll" portions as needed. This is run from the installer at installation time. This should handle your install for the work station.

For the server part, i copy it to a folder that is seperate from the server(on my work computer). delete any unwanted data and make an install for it. No bootstrap, naturally. It is basically a drop the data in the right place type thing.

This seems to work really good for me. Please forgive me if I left anything out.

Oh, all my apps are installed with a 20 user runtime, but are sold in 1 - 5 - or increments which I handled by user count. I charge by how many concurrent users, but didn't wish to purchase multiple runtime copiies.

hope it helps you. I spent a lot of time working out a way to go smooth.
