Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    find last record in embedded browse

    I need to find the last record in an embedded browse and open a form with that record displayed. I am able to get everything to work, except it will not go to the last record, instead it goes to whatever record is selected in the browse. I want to go to the last record regardless of which one is selected. Here is the code:

    'Get pointer to child table in the set
    child_tbl = table.get("activity")

    'Try to move to the first record
    child_tbl.fetch_first()

    'If there are no records, add one.
    if child_tbl.fetch_EOF()

    'code for opening the form to add record

    else
    child_tbl.fetch_last()
    dim vrecno as N
    vrecno = child_tbl.recno() '< This is picking up the selected record
    in the browse instead of the last record?

    dim fptr as P
    fptr = form.load("QuickCheckInOut","dialog")
    fptr.Recno_goto(vrecno)

    fptr.show()

    fptr.Close()
    end if

    The problem is it will go to the record selected in the browse and not only to the last record.

    Any help? Thanks, Dan

    here is a 50 cents script that should do the job:
    parentform:browse1.fetch_last()

    make that 25 cents.

      That did the trick!

      But I have a question. Why would "child_tbl.fetch_last()" not work just the same?

        Who said it didn't?
        It did, only in the "outer space". It is pointing to the last record, but doing so "behind the scene". For you to see it, you need to resynch the form (doesn't always work) so the pointer at the form and the pointer at the table co-incide.

          Dan, check the value in vrecno by writing it to the trace window or a msg box. It's possible the value is being assigned before the last record has been fully fetched. The script will not wait for the fetch to be concluded before moving on to the next statement in the script. Unless wrapped in a UDF statements that involve disk or network activity do not pause the script. Windows is a multi-tasking environment.

          Later on...

          The following script works fine in a button on the Invoice form in AlphaSports, once you create a new form based on the Invoice_items table and name it Inv_items. However, the list of linked child table records is small and the disk activity is local. If I were pulling this over a network or if the list of linked child table records was large I would not be surprised to see the error you're getting.

            Maybe I need to ask it this way, what is the correct way to find the last record in the child table associated with the currently selected parent record? I don't want the form to change focus, just "behind the scenes" pick the last record and reference a field in that record.

            Thanks, Dan

              The "last" record is a product of what index or filter/order you use and varies accordingly.

              Code:
              t=table.current(2)  2: assuming it's the first child
              [COLOR="Blue"]t.index_primary_put("index_name") applicable index if
              needed and/or if differet from the linking field filter/order. Since you are
              looking for the last child associated with the parent, you do not need to
              put any index here, skip this line.[/COLOR]
              t.fetch_last()
              That's it.

                Dan,

                To try to simplify this in words...

                1. You open a table and ALL the records are there in the order that they were entered.

                2. You want them to be in an order so you apply an index to the table so that all the records are in a desirable order.

                3. IMPORTANT - You only want to consider a certain 'SET' of the records so you apply a filter. At this point you can ONLY see these records and not all the records that are in the table. So now what Gabe has suggested, t.fetch_last(), will now go and get the last record of this set.

                HTH

                  Re: find last record in embedded browse

                  It seems the "child_tbl.fetch_EOF()" function was messing me up. With some outside help, this is the updated code: note the label to keep from putting the same code in twice (If the book has not ever been checked out, or if it's been checked back in).

                  'Get pointer to primary table
                  dim tbl as P
                  tbl = table.current()
                  'Get pointer to child table in the set
                  dim child_tbl as P
                  child_tbl = table.get("activity") 'Would table.current(2) work the same?
                  'Try to move to the last record
                  child_tbl.fetch_last()
                  dim vrecno as N
                  vrecno = child_tbl.recno()

                  'If there are records, check to see if the book has been checked in...
                  if .not. child_tbl.fetch_EOF() then
                  if child_tbl.indate = {} then
                  dim fptr as P
                  fptr = form.load("QuickCheckInOut","dialog")
                  fptr.Recno_goto(vrecno)
                  'fptr.restrict_navigation = .T.
                  fptr.show()

                  fptr.Close()
                  else 'Otherwise, check it out again.
                  goto AddNew
                  end if

                  else 'If there are no records, add one (check book out).
                  AddNew:
                  dim fptr as P
                  dim pvBookID as N
                  pvBookID = tbl.BookID
                  fptr = form.load("QuickCheckInOut","dialog")
                  fptr.restrict_enter = .F.
                  fptr.new_record()
                  fptr.restrict_enter = .T.
                  'fptr.restrict_navigate = .T.
                  fptr:Bookid.value = pvBookID
                  fptr.show()

                  fptr.Close()
                  end if

                  parentform.resynch()
                  parentform.browse2.activate()
                  parentform.browse2.resynch()
                  anybody see any problem with this?

                  Thanks, Dan
