Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    what can cause blank records?

I have a table with 12000 records. Just recently, the last 4000 records are completely blank. No values at all; the records still exist but all field values are blank, including the auto-increment key field. I have one non-Alpha theory, but can any one suggest what other abnormal condition might cause this? For example, if I mixed an older index with that dbf file, etc.

Re: what can cause blank records?

    Steve,
If it is a desktop application, 4000 records is a bit too much for bad manual data entry so it can only be something else. Most likely it is an import from Excel which can import way more "records" (blank rows) than there is data. Alternatively some weird script looping unexpectedly. Alternativley some other append operation going haywire (maybe this is an Australian colloquialism, but it means going crazy - I await with interest whether or it is unique to Australia - maybe I should Google it and find out.....). If not, maybe a bad network connection causing repeated transactions - anyhow, just a few suggestions as requested.

I agree with the excel inport. Yesterday inported excell sheet had 200 records with data, but add 489 records.

I am guessing you have a operation or script dumping the records in there.

Re: what can cause blank records?

        Hi,
As Steve stated that these are not true "blank" records but actual records that have been blanked out, I am thinking something other than an import or operation as the cause.

        Steve,
You mentioned maybe an errant index....what about a set linkage that went awry?

        Garry,

I have heard this saying for as long as I can remember here in the US (so about 45 years give or take seeing as I'm just past 50 now! :) ).

How do you know if the record had data and was blanked or just a record created that is blank?

Did you recently backup & have "compact database before backup" checked.

Did blank records disappear when you packed table?

Have heard the "gone haywire" and used it since I was a kid. I am 61.

              4000 records?
              One third of your records?

              Call the police!
The only logical explanation is, your neigbor has a key to your house, sneaks in the middle of the night and adds blank records to your table!
That, or a bad script and/or field rules. And not just a bad script, a bad one that someone kept on playing and playing and playing..
