Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

FTP Upload problem with Users and Groups

    Hi,

    I have just started having problems with uploading files via Internal FTP. I have set the project settings with the relevant details and can sucessfully upload all tables and web components via FTP. However, when i attempt to publish web security files, in particular IMPORT USER INFORMATION FROM SERVER, i get the error;

"There are no web user files in the selected published location".

Can anyone advise me on what i could do to resolve this issue.

    Thanks,

    Denis

Through trial and error, i think i may have pin pointed the problem. Has this got something to do with path Aliases e.g.

    My data path alias is

    [PathAlias.ADB_Path] = c:\Alpha\issues\mydata

Should I have a path alias for my security files???

    Thanks

    Denis

I never had to - not to say that it's not necessary mind you!

It does more sound like you haven't published the user data to the server in the first place, which you have to before you can start importing altered data. I have occasionally had to publish the data several times before it 'stuck' so to say though but not all the time.

Re: FTP Upload problem with Users and Groups

You said "publish web security files" and then "IMPORT USER INFORMATION FROM SERVER". What do they have to do with each other? The first is one part of publishing your application to a server location, the later is a totally different deal, it's to import users and groups FROM the server to your development copy, typically to keep them in sync. The message means there are no web-security users tables on the server copy of your application, which means you have not (fully) published your application to the server.

Web security files take care of themselves, there is no need to create an alias to their location. They do not reside in the same place as your database files, they are published to the same location as your components and A5W pages.

To publish security files, you just check the Publish Web Security Data tables on the Publish dialog. You only do that once for a given project, or at least you don't do it after your application is operational and you might overwrite your online user tables.

Re: FTP Upload problem with Users and Groups

          Thanks for the reply guys.

The problem is with IMPORT USER INFORMATION FROM SERVER and PUBLISH SECURITY FILES only. It has been published already and i can confirm that all files reside on the server. I then replaced my standard default FTP site with a multi user FTP site which is when i started getting the problem.

My biggest confusion is that I can publish everything (TBL's and WEB COMPONENTS) but not WEB SECURITY FILES via FTP. So there must be a seperate reference for WEB SECURITY FILES or ALPHA 5v8 does not like multi user FTP sites?

Perhaps Alpha can offer some input.

          Thanks.

          Denis

Re: FTP Upload problem with Users and Groups

The process to publish any security files is exactly the same process as publishing any pages and their support files, such as images. If you publish from the publish dialog with a particular publish profile and the pages and images are published to the server, then the web security files will also publish, regardless of the process you use to transfer the files. The security files for the settings and page permissions publish automatically when any other file is published.

However, the web security data files must be published explicitly, as they do not automatically publish. Your error indicates these were not published. As Steve points out, they typically only require publishing once and they are NOT stored with other data files, but reside in the published project main folder.

To publish these, either check the box marked "Publish web security data files" on the publish dialog when you publish anything else, or publish from the "publish" option from the web security menu, being sure to use the same profile as used to publish the pages. The process simply copies the files in the local project folder to the published project folder.

              Jerry,

              Thanks for your input.

I know this is very strange, but i will elaborate on the issue some more...

              My standard setup within the Web Project Profiles is as follows;

THIS WORKS FINE WITH TABLE and WEB COMPONENT UPLOADS BUT NOT WITH IMPORT USER INFORMATION FROM SERVER.

              Error Message:

"There are no web user files in the selected published location".

              PUBLISH USING FTP:
              FTP Address - 192.168.10.10
              Username - myusername
              Password - mypassword
              Folder - \A5Webroot\myproject

THIS WORKS WITH IMPORT USER INFORMATION FROM SERVER (WEB SECURITY) DOWNLOADS

              PUBLISH USING FTP:
              FTP Address - 192.168.10.10
              Username - myusername
              Password - mypassword
              Folder - \ALPHAUSER\A5Webroot\myproject

So you can see that i have had to add the FTP login user id name (ALPHAUSER) to get this to work. I just ran the test again.

If i upload tables and web components using the second option, it creates a new directory /ALPHAUSER in that location and places the uploaded files in there. So obviously I cannot do that either.

I now have two seperate profiles to get around this issue.

              What do you think?
