Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: A5 Platinum !!!

I would hope as they sate they will continue to sell V8 that it will also be supported. It needs to be as there are still several issues to be resolved that I have seen in threads on this board. There is to much speculation and not enough facts regarding the platinum version. They have attempted to wet peoples appetites with the email sent out and have obviously succeeded with some and failed with others.

I have had a slight change of heart as I remember a few years back purchasing MYOB accounts software and 6 weeks later a new version coming out. I wasn't to happy and asked why they hadn't informed me at the time but the sales representative said they never know when a new release would come out. At least Alpha have given some warning to a new version and offered full credits towards purchasing the new version when it comes out.

I still think they need to put their efforts in to resolving these long term design issues that keep being aired on the message board.

      Re: A5 Platinum !!!

Here's the text of the email I received for those who haven't yet:

"Alpha Five Platinum Edition arrives soon.
      These offers end sooner!

When you take advantage of this offer with our most aggressive pricing ever,
You will ALSO get full credit towards the purchase of Alpha Five Platinum Edition!
(Plus you can still keep your version 8 license... or pass it to a colleague.)
In approximately 30 days, Alpha Software will release Alpha Five Platinum Edition - by far the fastest, most powerful and comprehensive version of Alpha Five yet.

News about Alpha Five Platinum Edition will be released soon. Alpha Five Platinum Edition offers full connectivity to live SQL data on the desktop, a huge number of brand new features for web and desktop application developments as well as massive improvements to existing features. Stay tuned to our Blog for the latest news and upcoming videos. And of course, any application you build in Version 8 will be 100% compatible with the Alpha Five Platinum Edition.

Unlike in the past (where we stopped selling the previous version when a new version shipped), we're going to continue to offer Alpha Five Version 8 for the foreseeable future because of its excellent capabilities.
If you buy Alpha Five version 8 (or a runtime, the application server or a bundle) right now - you'll get our most aggressive pricing ever AND you will get full credit towards the purchase of Alpha Five Platinum Edition - should you decide you want the extra power. In other words, any dollar you spend today can be credited towards the Alpha Five Platinum Edition - and you can still keep your version 8 license. (You have to spend the credit within 365 days of the Platinum Edition's release, and the shipping and handling is not included as part of the credit.)
Take advantage of these remarkable savings (before prices return to more normal levels) while they are on offer now- and get full credit towards the upcoming Alpha Five Platinum Edition. Offers end Wednesday, Feb 27th so act now."
      ...
      regards, R

Thanks - it sounds like this was aimed at people likely to buy A5 V8 in the next few weeks, although it is weird that this should pop up without any prior announcement...

Even if my company won't upgrade, *I* certainly want a copy...

My prediction is that this new version will be able to connect to external databases (MySQL, Oracle etc.) and handle them live through normal Desktop Forms instead of having to make ugly x-dialogs (This would be a great new feature). and some speed enhancements specially on the web side (I hope)
          Cheers

            Re: A5 Platinum !!!

How would you like to be able to create a sql database with platinum? Maybe?

I think Platinum is in beta right now and it seems to me with my short memory that all the even numbered versions (2, 4, 6 ) were rather short lived wile the odd numbers were mostly around for a while. Anyone concur?

Version 4 was around for quite a while, especially if you include 4.5 in that. Version 2 was too long ago for me to really have a good sense of how long it was before 3 came out. As for Version 6, it was released in July of 2004 and Version 7 followed in October of 2005.

As a V9 beta tester, it would be a mistake for me to list a bunch of new features and enhancements in v9, as it is always possible that some things in the beta may not make it to the final release. But what I can say is ..... Wow!

I guess the cat is out of the bag now. I been playing with the beta also. I DO plan the purchase and already asked about the price. Of course there is no answer so far.

I will say WOW as Raymond said.

Wish I could say what I am loonking at, but also not sure what will make it to final.

                      Re: A5 Platinum !!!

OK, in todays email to try and get me to purchase another V8 license before Platinum ships, they now call the new software not only Platinum, but V9 Platinum.

So they have determined that it deserves a whole new release, not a .5 release which I thought originally.

Well if they are expecting a large turnover from 8 to 9, there had better be alot of new features that I need NOW.

Almost every time I use Alpha I find a new feature, so far I think I am on the C's, so I have a way to go before I consider V9.

I am looking for two features: Build one app and it works as a desktop or web app. Or at least field rules at the table level are read by the web app.

I am building Hybrids and those two features would have me jump for joy as well as jump to 9!

                        Barry,

I have been playing a little both ways also. My thought at this point is to make a web app and use it on a lan as well as a wan. This cuts a lot of time in dual developement. I found the local users can log in just like they were on the internet. Why do I want to spend the extra time with both sides? SQL is also getting easier to use, so there may be a change in table types real soon for me.

I have to go server(no choice) for internet and see no reason to keep a desktop going.

I have a lot of learning to do and a lot of work. Been reading(not contributing yet) in the server side of this forum.

                          WOW!

I just got chastized by a var in an email for mentioning the beta. I only did this after reading another answer on this thread that indicated the beta.

It was uncalled for and not very professional. I did not let out any big secret since someone else did it first.

It is easy for anyone to see who has the beta as more of their time is being spent looking at the features and trying to help debug, therefore a little less time spent on the forum with current issues. You can tell who has it by their spotty absence here.

I was absent from the forum for a number of weeks and sure wish it was because I was beta testing v9. But alas, no.

Once the emails started coming advertising Platinum I figure it would only be logical to think someone somewhere must be beta testing it. The cat may have been let out of the bag but the bag was clear plastic, so no surprise.

You do realize though Dave that if I find any remaining bugs that I am going to complain to you for not finding them. :)

                              Yes Tim,

But, I got it late and have not had the proper time to do a lot of testing. Wish I had had it several weeks ago or a couple months. I still have to make a living, and with a surprise divorce(didn't know I was married) along with some other issues, it has been tough testing.

It seems to be pretty trouble free for what I do though.
