Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Creating web based user account

Hello, I'm new to A5v8 and could use some help. I'm in the process of building a web based database. Ive built multiple tables, grids, web pages, login and security all with the tutorials and help guide. Now Im stuck and spinning my wheels.

    1. My goal is to allow a new user to be able to create an account online; user name, password, security question, and determine which group he is in based on which type of account they chooses to create. In doing so automatically link the user name with an autogerated user_Id, which is a field in a table they will populate in creating the account. My goal is to avoid having to manually add users.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm not even sure what to search for in the help guide or on the message board.

    Thanks,

    Bob

Welcome to Alpha! Sounds like you've made a lot of progress right away.

First thing to do is post web-stuff like this in the section for web applications. You'll get better responses.

Second -- actually, before the first thing -- is to use the Search feature here. Your questions have been covered before, and you'll find most of what you want readily available.

See you on the web section!

      Steve,

Thanks. I'm amazed how much I've been able to do, seeing as I have no idea what I'm doing. I did stumble upon "Adding Users with a Web Component" in the help guide this morning. As for the search function, I'm not even sure what to ask for, but I will check out the web section and try for better searches.

      Thanks for your time!

      Bob

Re: Creating web based user account

          Hi Bob.

if you are searching the community and can not find what you are looking for, you can use Google instead to qualify your search better.

To do this, go to www.google.co.uk, (or what ever Google area you are in) click on advanced search

on the next page - FIND

with all of the words - this will allow you to specify several words that must be in the result (A5 community search does not have this)

with the exact phrase - this will allow you to specify an exact phrase to search on (A5 community search does not have this)

with at least one of the words - this is the same as the community search that often brings back too many results

without the words - for this exercise this is useless

          under DOMAIN type in http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com

Hopefully this will give you less results that are more relevant (but remember using this method will be using the Google Indexed site so it may be a few days out of date. But if you are checking to see if anyone has already asked the same question it will be worth the 2 minutes it will take

          Good Luck

Did you install the samples (templates) when you installed Alpha?
              There can be only one.

                Stan,

I looks like those would really have helped me. I'm still using the trial version. I ordered A5 last week and it has not come in the mail yet. I'm assuming the samples are on the disk and will definately download them when I receive the disk.

                Thanks,

                Bob

Re: Creating web based user account

You can also just add the google toolbar and save a step--someone a while back mentioned this quite a bit ago.

                  Jim,

                  In regards to:
with all of the words - this will allow you to specify several words that must be in the result (A5 community search does not have this)
Alpha (actually vBulletin) does this but not exactly in the same way--using double-quotes around multiple (or a single) search words will give threads in which at least ONCE all three words will be there---and then also give a multitude of other posts and such that have just one or more or the words.
                  Mike

Even with the trial I thought if you selected "Sample and Template Databases" you should have them, at least I thought so?
