Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    "Vengeance" bug?

I was working on a report named "envelope". When I tried to print the report, it didn't print. So I tried to print it again, and this time a message popped up that said "Report 'envelope' not found". I closed the window, closed the "envelope" report that I was working in, and tried to open it, but got the same message. Then I noticed that a new report had appeared, named VENGEANCE. And now neither the form "envelope" nor the report "envelope" will open. The table "envelope" opens, but I can't get into the design mode. I get an error message that says "Error Record number is past end of table occurred while trying to start application." I've tried to delete the VENGEANCE report, but it won't delete, and I get a error message that says "read past end of file".

Does anyone know what this is, or how to get rid of it?

DO NOT delete what you do not know!

When I read the thread title, I thought you were just showing some humor, evidently not. Never heard of nor seen any "vengence" reports! but then again, I haven't had any dealings with the mobs of late. Make sure you don't have a horse's head under the cover too!

    Try the begnin things first:
    1-Backup first
    2-Close and re-open alpha.
    3-Compact.
4-The report might be corrupted, try rebuilding the report.
With "wiered" things like that, you should also think of a virus, worm, spyware..

Don't know if this is still true. but at least in older versions, if you looked at the underlying structure of the ddd files, either the fields or records had names like "vengeance", "invincible" and a few more similar meaning terms. I always thought it was pretty weird. Someone at Alpha has (or had) an offbeat sense of humor (or maybe it's just voodoo)? Maybe you need a good witch doctor?

This is a special entry in a Tables' dictionary file used by Alpha Five. What you described is indicative of a corruption of the table's data dictionary (specifically the tablename.DDD file, but may include the .DDM and .DDX file).

If you have a backup of the dictionaries, (make a backup of the corrupted database, then restore the table dictionary files. If you are able, copy any table operations or layouts that you can from the corrupted ones to recover those changed after the corruption.

If you don't have backups (very bad practice, though we've all been there), one feature of my CSDA Code Utility is to do regular backups of the dictionaries and optionally data.

The next update (coming soon.......) will do the backups in the background, so developing can continue, as well as optional zipping and packing. There is also a setting to only do it periodically if the database has changed.

One save from having to deal with a corruption or shooting oneself in the foot (we've all been there too!:)) makes it pay for itself.

          Ira,

Can you "dumb" it down for me? With no database training, I feel like I'm learning about databases through the back door. What is the Tables dictionary file? I'm pretty sure I'm not doing backups - how do I start doing that? I have re-created the table and form, and am currently working on the report. Also, why can't I delete the old "corrupted" ones?

The dictionaries are where the layouts, operation, code, etc - everything but the data and indexes are stored. There are ones for the tables (ending in .DDD, .DDM, .DDX) and for sets (ending in .SET, .SEM, .SEX), and one for the database (ending in .ALB, .ALM, .ALX). These are real important to backup during the development process, as they are changing a lot as you develop in Alpha Five.

If you have no backups (by saving all the database files, typically in one folder - or should be), you will have to make a backup of the files and put in another folder. Then without Alpha 5 open, delete the dictionary files (tablename.DDD, tablename.DDM, tablename.DDX) of the corrupted table. When you start the database again, Alpha will recreate those files, but you will lose all of that table's layouts and operations.

Now close that database and open the backup corrupted database. Go the control panel, select an operation or layout for that table, then right click and choose copy to. Copy it to the cleaned up database. Only do this for layouts or operations that seem OK.

When done, reopen the cleaned up database and hopefully you should be on your way.

If this is beyond your abilities, it might be wise to hire a consultant for an hour or so to get you through this.
