Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Make Table query

I am familiar with Microsoft Access and new to Alpha 5. I am wanting to now if their is an option similar to the "Make Table Query" function in Alpha 5. I have created a query based on an imported Access table and I would like to create a new table based on the query.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Michael, Welcome to A5!

As a former Access user (there are lots of us here), I found the best way yo learn A5 was to force myself to think only A5. Whenever I'd get stuck, lots of times, If I tried to do it the way it was done in Access, the frustration really set in.

In a nutshell, in the control panel, duplicate the table by right clicking on the table name, select utilities and then select duplicate. Next, create the query but select the the records you don't want. Next mark those records by going to the Operations tab of the control panel. Right click and select New Operation. Select Mark Records on the left and then your table on the right. Push the Create Using Genie button. Click Select Records and then choose Records Selected by a Saved Query Definition and choose the query. Follow the rest of the prompts.

Now you just need to delete the marked records by creating another operation to delete marked records. Than should do it.

If you get stuck, give us a hollar.

Thank you for the response. Based on your advise I just created the duplicate table. This gets me started.
      I appreciate the assistance.

An alternative might be to create a Copy operation to make a new table. In designing the copy operation you can use a filter (query) to specify which records to copy to the new table. This method also allows you to specify which fields to copy if you don't need all of them.

You might also, as Ken notes, try thinking through what you want and check out the Alpha methods available. In Alpha it is seldom necessary to do what you seem to require. If you want to perform some processing on a subset of records in a table you can use the same query to restrict the processing to those records, no second table required.
        There can be only one.

              Spring? What's that?

No, supposed to dip to -15 tonight but highs in the mid 30's on Sat and Sun.

Oh well, maybe in a few weeks?

                    Ha, hey Dave,

If you were to come here or go to western Michigan, you'd shiver so bad that it might actually warm you up.
