Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sluggish and delayed keystrokes

    Has anybody seen this

Open a form in V9. Go to a field to enter a new record (or change). As you type there is a slight delay before the character appears in the field.

I have tried it on forms created in V8 - new table and form created in V9 and even V9's Alphasports.

I don't have any problem like this in V8 or V7.

    Any ideas?

Tom, with vers 9 there are now so many options we're all going to have to learn to supply more information. Are these native A5 tables, or active links? If active links, what's the back end SQL engine?

        Re: Sluggish and delayed keystrokes

        Tom

They are all native tables - they are part of my operations program that we use to run the wholesale carpet business. Their are a few quickbook passive link tables but I'm not testing those with V9. I have copied my development files to another folder and that is what I am using.

However, I am seeing the same thing when I open v9 alphasports. I go to the customer form and add a record and when I go to type into a field there is a slight (very slight) but noticeable delay before the characters is placed in the field.

I don't have that problem with the same app (different folder) with V8.

I even created a new table and form in V9 and had the same problem. It could be the download that I have.

I don't have the problem with anything else on my computer.

This was one reason I asked the question about the system requirements for Platinum that Selwyn aswered.

I guess I will have to delete the beta and download again from the website.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated since it is becoming a problem in testing V9.

I can confirm the behavior you describe in Alpha sports, when adding a new customer. But, interestingly enough, in one of my own apps, developed in V7, in Clients I don't get the little pause - but in part numbers, the first character entered only pauses on one screen. After the first character, it doesn't.

PS: On a hunch it is StyleSheet related, I made a new form for my clients table, and used the AlphaSports style sheet, and the pause was there. Try making a form using the default background, and see if that removes the pause.

I would also report it to Selwyn/as a bug.

            Martin

            Thank you for your response.

I am in work now and don't have access to V9 Beta. I will try changing the stylesheet tonight when I get home.

I'll report back as to what happens and then if necessary I will report it as a bug.

            Again thanks

XP Pro or Vista? It may be a OS problem. I see the same thing with V8 sometime and wrote it off to OS being busy in background.

                Re: Sluggish and delayed keystrokes

Im running Xp media center edition Version 2002 SP2

I tried Martin's suggestion to change the stylesheet in alphasports - but it was to no avail.

I have no problem with v8 or v7 on this machine. Nor do I have a problem with any of the programs I am running on this machine.

It if is an OS problem, you would think that it would surface at another point in another program.

I even unistalled v9 and downloaded the beta again and reinstalled - same thing. If I create a form from scratch (new table etc) using default styles - it still get the same thing. There is a noticeable delay when typing into a field.

                  Re: Sluggish and delayed keystrokes

It must either be an OS issue or maybe a viurs, etc. screening issue.
I'm using XP Pro SP2 with 3.2 processor and 3 gig ram

I am getting the behavior in V9 Alpha Sports, in editing/entering a new client.

I would report it as a bug.

But I am not getting the behavior when entering/editing from a form created in V7.

One of the computers I use is 2003 server x64 and it has some problems with v8 in some development screens. Screen problems do not show up when using XP. I had turned in a bug report but I am guessing I am one of a very few that use 2003 server x64 so they have not cared to fix problem. V8 is the only program that has screen refresh problems so it can be a OS problem that Alpha has when run under some OS's.

I have not seen the problem yet.

What you might do is make a video of you typing and give Alpha the link to the video. You can download http://www.jingproject.com I had gotten link from Selwyn. Neat program. Can record video and screen shots of just what you want.

                      Hey everyone,

I am running Dell 2 ghz, 250 gb hdd, 2 gb ram with Windows Vista Premium Edition and am having the same thing happen on a very small app that I had running great in version 8. I didn't 'open' the app in version 9, I reconstructed the exact same tables, field rules, forms, etc. My State table in a form has only 2 fields - Stabrv 2 character and StateName 20 character- has a slight delay in version 9, but runs like lightning in version 8.

                        Everyone

                        Thanks for your responses.

I have turned in a bug report and have been in contact with Selwyn.

I also download a video (jing) for his to see what was happening.

                        Evidently he cannot duplicate it.

Martin - no viruses in my system (that was a good thought).

I am at a loss since v8 and v7 run fast - v9 which is supposed to run fast is not for me.

I did find that the sluggish keystrokes are only in entering or changing data in forms, browses and also in the genies. Typing while in the code editor or in interactive is fast and furious.

With the posts here, I know I am not alone in what I am experiencing.

I'm used to Alpha running perfectly (within reason) every time.

Here is my Jing video if anyone is interested.

I have similar issues with Google Mail in Internet Explorer occasionally (not other sites strangely enough, nor other apps, and I also did every virus scan under the sun - my machine is clean), e.g. getting a lag on keystrokes etc. Since A5 uses some parts of Internet Explorer, I am wondering if that might be related?

My hunch is that it is to do with the new HTML Bubble Help - Google Mail uses a similar thing with popups and right-click menus, so I suspect this may be what is causing the lag?

                              Hey Everyone,

I just tested all of my apps running in version 9 and all is well today.
The only difference from yesterday is that I had IE 7 running in the background yesterday and had a fresh boot today without IE 7 running.

Now I am back to that superduper speed in Alpha.
