Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    function to call companion form

Am trying to implement something Selwyn was showing in a browse on one of the videos. Putting a button in an embedded browse to call an edit form to edit the selected record. Works pretty well but am getting an occasional query retrieval error. See attachments. Seems something is not getting cleared after returning from form, but really have no idea. The parent table is on tab 1 showing as a browse. The child records I'm trying to implement this on is on a different tab. Seems when I go back to the parent browse on tab1 and do a page/multi-page down, then back to child tab, it retrieves fine. If I stay on the same parent browse page and just select a different record, then go back and try to edit the child, I get the error.
    3 attachments:
    button event
    function called from button event
    retrieval error

Re: function to call companion form

To do some troubleshooting, I inserted a ui_msgbox line just before opening the form with the var->lname in it. The name is not being captured for some reason for those times when the error is posted. Is there a way to make sure the current row in the browse is captured/pointed to other than tbl.get(alias) when my edit button is pressed? I noticed the action scipt to do this from a button on the form uses what I'm assuming is an a5 built-in function:

    a5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm(OpenMode,targetFormName,currentFormPointer,EmbeddedBrowseObjectName,targetTablePrimaryKeyExpression,linkDefinition, otherOptions)

This must be new. Can't find any explanation in the Help files, although the script itself is well documented.
    Thanks.

Verify that the record is saved prior to attempting to read the values of the record.

Where in the code would you suggest putting this? I'm assuming parentform.commit().
Further discovery: When the lname variable doesn't get captured, I can simply select the tab1 where parent browse records are and re-select the tab for child browse and the variable is loaded.

Changing focus from the child record to the parent record will cause a save of the child record.

You may need to play around with it some, but I believe you can put your record save command just prior to the getting the pointer to your table.

Thanks for your replies. Don't know if this is legit, but it seems to be working. Just seemed like something wasn't getting values updated at different times, so found what I think is updating the current record data buffer: Table.refresh().
Attached is the code I have for the Events action on the button. For some reason, the saving of the record didn't seem to fix the problem. Thought later that Selwyn was using a regular Browse on the video showing this technique and I'm using an embedded browse. Don't know if that would make any difference or not. Thanks again for your suggestions.
