    Dear Friends,

    This is my first posting and I am very happy to be here!

    I am a new user of Alpha Five Version 8 and I am reading a book (Alpha Five Made Easy – By Susan Hussey Bush) everyday to learn how to use it. Once I complete it, I will start with “XBasic for Everyone” – by Dr. Wayne. I am also reading a book about database design (Beginning Database Design – From Novice to Professional – by Clare Churcher).

    As I am still learning the basics, can anyone of you direct me how they would plan a solution to the following problem:

    My objective is to help the user with decision support through message boxes.

    - User to input POD and POA in a form

    After that, checks will be carried out to see whether is it acceptable to operate between the 2 points based on the rules set below (see table). The user will be prompted (if applicable) through a msg box.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    POD POA Check Message Box
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    Intl Intl Allowed Not Aplicable

    Intl Dom Not Allowed Display Error Message

    Dom Dom Allowed Not Applicable

    Dom Intl Allowed Display Warning Message

    Acronyms Used

    POD = Port Of Departure
    POA = Port Of Arrival
    Intl = International
    Dom = Domestic

    Would that be feasible? If so, which technique or topic would I have to learn in order to solve this problem?

    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to Alpha!

    What you want to do can be accomplished in a number of ways. Primarily, you need to do a test. You stated that the POD and POA are entered on a form. Will these be fields within a table? If so, you can use field rules to test that they are not the same. You can set up custom validation rules to display whichever message based on your test. If you don't want to use field rules, you could do action scripting using the can_depart of the second field on the form. In that you would do the test, and then display the appropriate message box. I would suggest you check out field rules as well as action scripting to see which way better suits your needs.

    Welcome Djamal.

    I think you will find Alpha a great tool.

    It seems from your description you will be needing to evaluate based on certain criteria whatever the user inputs for the POD and POA.

    If I understood you correctly, take a look at the Select...Case capabilities in Alpha. This will allow you to make a series of logical conclusions based on input data.
