Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Virtual Server Hosting of Alpha 8/Platinum

I can see this question has does the rounds. For my app in its current state $50 a month to host is far too much. Also, if things go well I would like to have multiple databases and domains because I am thinking eventaully once I have learnt what I am doing I may do this professionally. I don't want my own server connected to the internet. I already rent a virtual server. They let me run my own code. Why exactly can I not use this Virtual Server and where can i find the intructions to set it up - this seems like the "dark art" bit af Alphasoftware's great looking offering. I imagine it puts quite a few potential customers off because it did me - I am just hoping there is an adequate solution and I'll find it. ;)

    Appreciate any answers and comments.

Re: Virtual Server Hosting of Alpha 8/Platinum

    Jonathon,

I believe that any server that is to host Alpha has to have WAS installed. To date I think that Firm Support and Zebra are the only companies currently offering this ...and so it is either them or host it yourself on your own server. You say you can run your own code on the rented virtual server...if this means the ability to load the WAS then it may be possible...but am thinking it only means that you can use code to modify the server's use and such.

Now that this thread is bumped to the top again, if I am incorrect in anything a more knowlegable forum member will address this.

      Hi,
I just bought V9 because the website states it can be hosted at any VPS if you load WAS. So I did.
I would like, today, ASAP, to hire someone to show me via remote access how to publish a web app to my VPS.
Anybody willing to do this? Please email [email protected] with your rate.
      Thanks

        Hi Barbara

Did you have any luck with your VPS? How was it?

To also clarify, any version of WAS will run on a VPS.

You CAN run the WAS on your virtual server. There should be no reason to get another one just for WAS. Of course, you do have to purchase your own copy of the WAS to install it.

What I'm not absolutely positive about but I'm sure someone here can answer is, "Does it require a Windows server like the desktop version does?"

              Cal,

I think it does, but I am NO authority.

I believe richard said there were now a bunch of isp's out there that can host alpha.

The 14 minute video is quite well done and very explicitly demonstrates how to install WAS on a Windows machine, including VPS hosting.

I have yet been able to find something as well done for a Linux box. My VPS is 100% Linux and I either do have the knowledge or cannot figure out how to install it on my host server. if there could be a 15 minute video it would really help! Or let us know it can be installed anywhere in the world on a Windows system only.

It would be a short video; WAS installs on Windows OS only. A pretty consistent recommondation is Windows Server 2003 or Small Business Server 2003.

That has been my understanding as well. Still, Alpha continues to indicate it can be run on any hosting service/ISP in the world. That does not sound like Windows only to me and should perhaps be amended to say "any Windows based ISP/hosting service in the world". I believe that is some of the confusion that started even this thread.

I have not found an isp(sure there is one) who would not provide a windows os. If there are any, they will soon change.

                      Try godaddy?

I personally wish it was so it could be done on a linux system. It would save so much money for the ones that need it and would further HELP Alpha put their product out to the public. In other words, it would be a win win situation.

Re: Virtual Server Hosting of Alpha 8/Platinum

                        Dave,
I have been looking around for a reasonably priced VPS today and I see that Alpha recommends Godaddy on their VPS video. I also noticed that the prices had increased considerably at Goddady since the video was done. As I am only wanting to use the VPS initially to play around with the WAS it was a bit pricey.
I Googled "Godaddy" and found this link (http://nodaddy.com/) which put me off as I was considering giving them a try. As to the accuracy of the comments I dont know, but it did not leave me with the confidence to go with them. I am considering 1&1 or Web24 here is Australia.

I hope this comment is not in bad taste as I'm sure some people have had a good experinece with Godady.

Re: Virtual Server Hosting of Alpha 8/Platinum

No, it's not in bad taste to let us know about possible issues at a hosting company. The nodaddy site is very revealing, especially if you read the forum comments from their employees. I simply find GD's website too difficult to navigate.

Fortunately you can get VPS accounts at thousands of other locations. Start with www.zebrahost.net and www.firmsupport.com who cater to Alpha websites. My choice for dedicated servers is www.theplanet.com.

Note - if you Google 1&1 you will find far worse complaints than you found for GD. Always look for complaints about any hosting service. I think the fact is, you get what you pay for here as much as anywhere else. A very low price service may cost you in terms of your own time and headache.

How many domains can a WAS serve on the same VPS?
