Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Oracle Datasource - Passive Link Table Problem

I'm a Newbie in Alpha5V8 and experienced in MS Access. I have a table in Oracle that I'm trying to use with a "Passive Link." I have successfully configured and connected to the datasource. The username is HumXXX.

I have also done similar steps in Access. In Access, once I am connected I see a pick list of tables similar to this:

    FredXXX.HR_ABC
    FredXXX.HR_DEF
    HumXXX.Employees
    HumXXX.Salary
    HumXXX.Vacation

In Alpha5V8, once I get to "Specify Datasource" I only see:
    Employees
    Salary
    Vacation

I am trying to get to FredXXX.HR_ABC, but it is not in the list.

I've guessed that I need to change the "Tables/Views - Filter List" to "System Tables." I then get an error message (see attached PDF files for details).

Can someone help me to get to the correct table? Thanks!

    Diane

Re: Oracle Datasource - Passive Link Table Problem

    Hi Diane

    Welcome to Alpha!

It's kinda hard to tell what is going on as it seems you are doing things correctly if you got as far as you did. My guess is that there is a possibility that the NamedConnection string your chose is perhaps not the correct one and therefore not showing the appropriate tables.

Another option, what tables show in the tables drop down from your pdf? The table showing in your pdf is not one of the several you mentioned.

    Regards

    Jeff

I made the Connection string and it must be basically correct since I recognize many of the tables in the list. I've built a Passive Link to one of them and it is a valid table.

The variation between my example table names and the PDF file is because I'm trying not to include confidential information in any posts. Sorry for the confusion.

Part of the problem seems to be that I'm going in with a UserName of HumXXX but the table I want "belongs" to another owner called FredXXX. In Access it doesn't seem to matter but it does to Alpha5.

      Does this make any sense?

      Thanks for the reply!

I don't know anything about Oracle but that at least sounds plausible. Perhaps someone familiar with Oracle can chime in.

Any chance in Access you used an Admin username and password to make the connection since an Admin would seemingly have access to all tables?

The bit before the . is the SCHEMA under which the table was created - have you set up synonyms to allow other users to see the tables in schema FredXXX?

We had some problems with table listings not showing up at all for Oracle until recently, if you have set up the synonym for the tables correctly (and since Access sees them I suspect you have) I suspect you might have hit another Oracle bug? Just submit a bug report stating you can't see tables in other schema etc...

I've just emailed my Oracle "guru" to see if your comments will help him to see if there is anything else he can do to help. I've also asked if he can help me to connect directly to FredXXX instead of going through HUMXXX.

            Thanks for the help!

I just checked, even when synonyms are set up, at least the QUERY builder and genies don't list tables that aren't in the schema for the user you log in as - it might be worth submitting a bug report to Alpha 5 as I believe they said before that it *should* work. I think it does recognise the different schema, it just doesn't do so in query builders and other graphical representations of your database.
