Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Moving A5 DBF to an A4 app

I'm sure this is an unusual thing. I imagine there has been lots of discussion on moving from A4 to A5. But what I have done is copy some DBF files from an A5v7 application folder over to an old laptop that has A4v3.

I set up an application to view these DBF tables that held all my contact info. At first the DBF's would not open in A4 due to an error in the memo fields. I figured out that I could copy the tables out to new tables and omit the memo and picture fields. This allowed me to open the DBF's in A4v3 just fine.

But now I am wondering what I can do to bring the memo data over. Is there a way to copy a DBF with memo fields in the current A5v7 format into a DBF with the memo field intact in a version supported by A4v3? How do I get the memo field data over to my A4v3 application?

    Sean,

You need to copy both the .dbf and .dbt files to a folder and import them into your database. The memo fields should appear.

      Thank you Dave.

I am going the other way. I don't have any .dbt files. They are .fpt files from A5v7. How do I convert the A5 memos to the .dbt type used by A4? Is this even possible?

If that isn't possible maybe I should change the memo field type to character?

White Town has a series of dbf converters, including dbf2dbf: http://www.whitetown.com/dbf2dbf/
I haven't used this one, but might be worth trying.

If you don't have more that 254 characters in any memo field, that would work...

The fields that have more would be truncated.

Am curious....has anyone ever just changed the files extension before?? From either .dbt to .fpt or vice-versa as in this case?? They are both forms of memos and may have a similar structure. Course it may possibly corrupt them so if someone is to try, do it on a copy.

Most likely is the corruption scenario... It's a different version of dbase.

I don't have any experience in the area but has anyone tried exporting to ascii and importing to an A4 table? A quick trial indicated to me that the memo field at least exports correctly.
                There can be only one.

The dbf to dbf converter looks promising, Thanks for the tip. I did think of trying an export operation. I noticed that A5 did not have an option to export to an earlier dbf version. I will try the csv file and see if that works better than my previous solution. Removing the memo fields works but I would prefer to have that data come over with the rest of the data.

Thanks for everyones input, very helpful.
