Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Advanced SQL query against A5 .dbf tables

I've got a couple of sets based on 27 tables. Relationships include 1:1, 1:M, and M:M. Need to populate a list box (or browse, or similar sort of display) with subsets of the data based on those relationships and various selection criteria.

I've not found a readily apparent way to do this with standard A5 query filters, etc. Although plenty of SQL examples abound for Access, etc., nothing found for similar query approach to native .dbf tables.

How can standard SQL be directly executed against A5 dbf tables (as in the examples of Access, etc)? I'd get the resulting recordset back & populate my form as desired via XDialog.

First, I think you must re-visit your design. Any set that's based on 27 tables, or query that requires data from 27 tables immediately suggests a poor design.

But, assuming you have your reasons, how about putting things together first as a mapped table, then querying on that?

Re: Advanced SQL query against A5 .dbf tables

The design isn't actually mine. I'm dealing with passive link to a huge medical billing system ($150,000). Insanely large DB schema.

Creation of a mapped table... is that the <tbl>.append() method? If so, it appears the method actually physically appends the "Transaction" table data to the "Master" table (from A5 help)??

If I've got that right, I'll take it into consideration. Would prefer to avoid on-disk duplication of data.

Still seems odd there's no easy way to run SQL against A5 tables (since the functionality is there for just about any other DB type). Thinking about having my A5 app send the selection criteria to a slave PB app to generate the dataset and return that to A5 to populate my form in XDialog - thus eliminating duplicate data to disk.

Ah... just found Create New Mapped Table through the control panel (after spending an hour or so in the help file - d'oh!). Looks like this creates a virtual table. So it might do the trick.

        Thanks Steve!

After some experimentation, it seems Mapped Tables don't seem to allow for M:M relationships. A5 help suggests XBasic approach to M:M. Couldn't locate suitable ODBC driver or OLE provider for the A5 .dbf tables. May have to go AlphaDAO or ADO against source database.

Alpha tables are FoxPro 2.6 compatible, I think.
            There can be only one.

              Mike -

Yes, it appears this is a new feature to v9. I certainly don't see it in my v8 control panel.

And it was indeed my understanding that A5 dbf is FoxPro 2.6 compatible. And for most fields it seems to be so. But lengthy text fields (and perhaps memo) cause errors.

So I've still not found a way to issue a very compound/complex SQL query against the A5 tables. It would be nice to have this widget in my toolbox. Oh, well.
