Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Sure Wish I had a V8 User's Guide

    Is there any where I can get a V8 User's Guide. I have worn my V1 User's Guide doggie-eared.... When I wanted to write a script I just refered to the List of Function in the back of the book. I feel like I am fumbling around in the dark with V8. Here's a simple script that changes a couple of fields in a couple different databases when you push the button. It doesn't work in V8. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    change_begin(db_current(3))
    custserv->woloc = "Down for Parts"
    custserv->shrolldate = date()
    custserv->stat_time = time()
    reportin->loccode = 10
    REPORTIN->LOCDATE = DATE()
    change_end(db_current(3), .T.)
    card_resynch()
    end if

      Gabe gave you the online one.

      Go to the control panel
      help
      download patches

      Scroll down the page, and if you like you can download the appropriate size help file you want.

        Code:

          Here you can download the help filefor Alpha 5 v8 in PDF
          http://www.alphasoftware.com/documentation/
          I have then Taken the PDF file to a Place like Staples, Officemax, or one of your copy centers and had them print the pages I wanted, double sided and then have them bind them into a book with a plastic front and back cover. It may cost you $50.00 depending on how many pages. But this will give you a paper version of the user guide. The User guide alone is about 1114 pages.
          Hope this helps

            Mark:
            I am not really sure if I want to have a hard copy of the help file for several reasons:

            a-The help file is a constantly (or should be) changing document as more functions are added and some are deleted. The hard copy might serve you well for a while then you have to go back and find what has changed and the only way to do that is to go online and compare. If you are going to go to the online version, what's the point of having the hardcopy? It's more like having the Yellow Pages, except with the Yellow Pages you get a free one every now and then.

            b-alpha, I believe since a year ago or so was trying to hire someone to redo the help file. Don't know where they stand on that, but going back to my previous point, you should expect constant changes.

            c-Even the online help file is lacking. I come across functions and few other things that are not documented but yet available to use.

              G Gabriel

              I thought Laurie was looking for a copy of the "users guide" which is part of the "help file" i just was under the understanding that Laurie's version of the "users guiode from Version 1 was pretty well worn and out of Date with all the changes in version 8. Since no one makes a printed copy of the users guide. I was expressing a way to make a printed copy of the "users guide" for verrsion 8, there is also a version 9 available through the Help file PDF. The last printed copy that I know of that is still available from "OnDemandManuals"
              http://www2.ondemandmanuals.com/4dcg...keyword=&user=
              and this was or is for Version 5. It ios priced at $28.00 I really don't know what it would cost to print. I just know I had the PDF file of Xbasic for everyone printed and bound and it cost me about $50.00 from Kinko's.
