Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Postgresql on Linux as a backend

I have a client who has asked me to look at Alpha Five.

Their situation is a small LAN with queries that are run against tables that often run up to 5GB in size and greater and 3-4 users submitting queries. How is Alpha Five with working against a resource like that?

I would prefer to run PostgreSQL on Linux since that's its native environment. The machine itself would likely have 8-16GB of RAM and a 64bit Linux kernel.

    Cheers

It's been 28 hours+ since I posted and no one has responded. Does that mean people aren't using Linux database back-ends with Alpha Five?

      Pete,

I think if you search enough, postgre is a go and so is a linux server. I have not tried anything like that, but I would.

Pete - I want to make sure that you know you can download A5 free from alpahsoftware.com. And, with that, you get a free 30-day trial. This is the full product - nothing held back.

And, because A5 as installed on your local machine can also serve A5 pages to your local machine, you can easily "take a look" at what A5 can do for you and decide whether it's what you want.

Finally, if for some reason it's not doing what you want or you're having problems, be sure to tell us about it here. Chances are someone will point you down the right path or provide the help you need.

What server OS the database is on SHOULDN'T make a difference as long as the database is accessible from wherever the A5 app or WAS needs to access it :)

Re: Postgresql on Linux as a backend

I just started to try out A5 MY GOAL is to integrate our CRM that runs on MySQL and our ERP that runns in PostgreSQL, all my sql works very fluent and fast, but ones we try to stablish some direct grid connections to the posgre server (that is on a linux machine) the A5 hangs, specially if we add filters. I dont see other reason but a bug in there..

I am doing a very simpliar query to mysql and does not hang, that makes me wonder if there not a full support for Posgresql db.

the funny thing is that it works using active link tables

seems like the sql genie on direct grid connections needs some work on the postresql part.
