Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Container object

    Is it possible to store a file as embedded object in a tab? E.g. it would be very useful to store a pdf-file as object, not just a link to a local file. When double-clicking the related program (Adobe Acrobat) should open the file.
    Thank you

    No.

    Why would it be better to store the pdf as an object rather than a link?

    Actually you can place an ole object representing a pdf on a form if you have Acrobat, I think. An ole object doesn't have any events that I can find so double clicking it is not an option. Possibly you could place a hotspot or user object over the ole to respond to some action.

      Without this feature it is not possible to build an archive system (e.g. for scans, pictures and so on).

        If you say so.

        But then I don't know what an archive system might be.

          Do you see any other possibilty to achieve this?

            What do you want your "archive system" to accomplish?

              I may not understand along with Stan what you mean by "archive" - but I developed an app that does just this and it is used for document history/management. It uses the links to files methodology (pdf and jpg). My program creates and maintains a directory structure for the user as they add documents. It works quite well - at last check over 25000 pictures and probably as many pdf's.

                Hi Stan,

                Actually, you can store just about anything as an object. Create a property pointer, create what ever property values you want, then use

                property_to_string()
                property_to_blob()
                property_from_string()
                property_from_blob()

                That doesn't mean it's appropriate here. It sounds like he should be storing the archived pdf's in a memo field data object, although doesn't really have any advantages over a linking by filename method.
                Regards,

                  Thanks Ira. That sounds familiar enough that you probably pointed it out to me before this. Having never used the technique described it didn't suggest itself to me.

                  Time to study the functions mentioned. Since the examples in the help deal with character values and record pointers it will be a stretch to extend my thinking to other uses.

                  Well, that wasn't so difficult. Wonder why the documentation states...

                  FILE.TO_BLOB()
                  V5
                  Reads a binary file from disk into a blob variable. The data can be in either Windows Bitmap (.BMP) or JPEG (.JPG) formats.
                  Clumsy example attached. Way cool though, it was able to store the entire xbasic for everyone v8 pdf - 14,967 KB

                    Just another thought in this....depending on how much data is "archived" into the actual table you might run up against the 2 GB limit on the file size.
