Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browse control new record

Browse control does not seem to handle new records very well.

I have a simple table with two character fields
I make a form, put a browse control on it, link to the two character fields

I can view the form, I can add records by clicking on the bottom row entering data, or enter data hit return or tab, it goes to the next field, if its at the bottom it makes a new record.... AWESOME

    NOW the problems start....

I now make a predefined button for NEW RECORD.

    I test it.

I hit new record button, it makes a new line in the browse control. puts the cursor there and I start typing. nifty...... NOT

IF I happen to have the cursor in the browse control on a record. any record.
    Then click the NEW record.
it makes the new line, puts the cursor there
    I enter text.....
I hit tab... the text goes away!!!!!
I try again, I hit enter.... the test goes away!!!!!
I try again, this time i try to use the mouse to click out, "text goes away"

    this is rather bad!!!!

NOW, why they heck would I need a stupid button, when you just click on the bottom to add records....
because I have stupid users!!! if they do NOT have a button with BIG GIANT letters that says,, ADD RECORD!!!!! I will get 20 calls a week... "how do I add a record!!!" even if I put the directions on the damned form itself!!!!!

If I make a button, only about 5 people a week will call....
    HONEST!!!

This is exactly what will happen!!!!

So how does one make the browse contol play nicely!!!

I have a simple table with two character fields

Is the simple table with the two characters fields the parent table and the browse a child table?

I have a large inventory program which is a 1:M. Inventory Header with info, and a child browse for the carpet cuts sent to an apartment complex for installation.

I have three buttons beside my browse First Record, Enter new record and Last Record.

    OR -

Is the browse just a reflection of the two fields.

Maybe I am missing something. Is it possible to create a sample and zip it for our review?

      its a simple form,
I made a new blank form
I clicked the embedded browse control and placed it on the form

      I then made the button.

      nothing to it!

I am linking the zip of the project
the form to look at is category.

I am sorta playing with it to learn more about A5
I did a major project in A5 about 5 years ago
but lots has changed! So this is all experimental now

I have this problem show up some times & some times it works great. I have yet to pin down when it will work and when it will not. I have found when it starts acting up I press my save button, if that does not work I out of form and then go back in.

          Cooper,

I think part of the problem here was that you set the browse read only (in properties of the browse object).

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

I've put a new button on your form, it's called "Tom's New Category". It runs a short action script that releases the read only restriction, sets focus on the browse object, and then begins a new record. Seems to work fine.

Note: I've also modified the OnSave event for the browse object so that when the new record is saved the browse automatically reverts to read only status.

          Hope this helps.

Tom,,, Awesome,, your fix, did not totally fix the problem, MY FAULT!
But it did give me a clue to actually fix it!

To START. My fault, the form was never supposed to be read only!
I only set it read only playing with it! I wanted to see how the delete function works.... I was playing with the delete checked function and deleted all my records! I forgot to unset the read only.

BUT, without the read only feature, your button did work fine.
            My button does not!

            why???

the difference is the activate command!
If we activate the browse control, before doing a new record, it works!
If there is no activate, then it does not work!

            Any idea why???

              Re: Browse control new record

Cooper, my guess would be that when you use Ctrl-E or the toolbar Enter New Record button focus never leaves the browse on your form. However, when you try to do the same thing with a button on the form focus shifts to the button. Shifting focus back to the browse object in the button script restores the original context.

                Re: Browse control new record

Yeah, I figure its some thing like this.

Not to in any way say ACCESS is better, cause it aint!
I just used to work for the gov,, and was required to work with the crappy program! SO i know this.

In ACCESS you can set a form view, to continuous forms.
So its similar to the browse control, but with a bit more functionality!

I wonder if Alpha five has that ability?
I have not found it yet
