Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    suggestions Please

So far, I have 2 tables, Owners and Items. Each Owner will have one or more Items. There will often be more than one Owner per Item. When I search by Owner name for all Items that belong to that owner, I also want to see all Owners that are associated with the Item. Sort of like this:

Search for all Items that belong to the Owner, Selwyn Rabins. I type Selwyn Rabins in the name search box to find all of Selwyn's Items. The result would be at least one item and quite possibly more than one Item. All Items would show in a browse such as:

    Item 1
    Item 2
    Item 3
    Item 4
    Item 5

When I click on any one of the five Items, a description of that item appears along with all Owners of that Item. Thus it would show:

    --Owners----------- Item
    Selwyn Rabins-------A5v8
    Richard Rabins

My question is, how do I set this up? In a 1:Many set, the Owner will be linked to an Item by an ID number. If I use the same parent table (Owners), every owner will have an ID so how do I associate 2nd Owner ID number to the same item?

    Thanks for the suggestions,

    kenn

Update: I think I've figured it out, really quite simple. Reverse the tables and use the Item_Id as the 1:Many link. Should work just fine. However if anyone has a suggestion, I'm all ears...

Isn't this the classic case for a reverse set? Item (linked by item code, serial number, etc) linked one to many to owner (multiple owners of the linking key).

You might have to have a owner table, an item table, and a "owner key" table. The latter would have multiple records per owner, one for each item owned.

Otherwise you would be trying to define a many-to-many set which is not supported.
    There can be only one.

Many to many directly is not supported, but he could do it by giving a 2nd instance of the Owner table an alias and linking it 1:N to the Items table.

      Code:

      Owner
        |= Items
             |= Owner_Alias
Hopefully he won't want to do anything with that data except look at it!

        Hi Stan,

I added more fields to the Owners table. Now I have:

Item1 (field in the Items or Parent table) linked to the Owners table (Child table) by Item_Id:
        RO1_Last
        RO1_First
        RO2_Last
        RO2_First
        RO3_Last
        RO3_First

So, if there is more than one owner for an Item, I list all Owners for that Item. I think that would work OK. I also thought of a many-to-many relationship.

        Thanks for your reply.

          Hi Robin,

I thought of that as well and yes, all that will needed is to view the record on the screen with an occasional screen print.

          Thanks,
