Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Basic edition for accessing v8 Enterprise application

I have a full license copy of A5v8 Enterprise and am getting ready to switch over to using v8 to continue development of my in-house application. I've been investigating how to use my full developers version along with my 3-user runtime and I think I have that all sorted out.

But, while reviewing the Alpha store I began to question if I might be able to add another license by simply buying another copy of A5v8, but in the basic/personal edition. I don't really need more than one developer copy but I only have the 3-user runtime and I need four workstations to be on concurrently.

It would cost me $139 for the basic Desktop edition of v8. If I have that version on one of my four workstations will I have full user ability with that version the same as with the Runtime version? I don't want to develop with it, I just want the user license. But I'm not sure if the Desktop edition is compatible with the application I create with my Enterprise edition. I don't see why it wouldn't work as a user. But it's not clear.

In other words, if I had three workstations all loaded with the v8 Desktop edition does that give me the same capability as a USER as having the Runtime Enterprise versions loaded on those workstations?

Re: Basic edition for accessing v8 Enterprise application

    From the Alpha store:

Alpha Five Version 8 Desktop Edition

Ideal for home and standalone users, build non-networked desktop applications.
    • You would require this edition, if you are a single user, and are only interested in building desktop applications.
    • You do not have the ability to build web applications.
    • You do not have the ability to build applications that will run using the runtime modules.

This is a single user stand alone version only and can not be used to network as you are talking about doing. So this is not an option for you. What I would do is to contact [email protected] and ask what it would cost to upgrade from a 3 user runtime to a 5 user runtime. I believe that this would be your best choice.

      Thanks Doug,

I didn't realize that version would not work in a network. I knew it would not support developing and multi-user but I didn't know it wouldn't allow the sharing of a database.

I think you are correct and I should upgrade to the 5-user Runtime.

Multi-user and sharing of a database are basically the same things. In order to share the database, more than one user would be accessing it.

Anyways, hope you get your situation solved to your satisfaction.

          Thanks Doug,

Yes, I know what to do now. I'll either decide to use my developer copy as a fourth user or upgrade to a 5-user Runtime.
