Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Linking record to anothe table or lookup

what you want can be done with out a set. In alpha it is called a coded look up field

EDIT This is what you have working now. :)

AS far as the new record form opening up a second time I think it is a bug. I can get it to stop if I change (in field rules) 'Force closest match' to 'Allow any value'. Or you can also avoid the problem by starting to type the new value instead of choosing it from the drop down.

EDIT2 I don't think you can use a set to do the same thing. you would need 2 columns, one for the Id and one for the category. I deleted the set by simply right clicking on it and chose delete.

A complex system that does not work is invariably found to have evolved from a simpler system that worked just fine.

Re: Linking record to anothe table or lookup

I am hoping someone will relook at this!
get the zip a few messages up!

        this is what is happening
it happens with a custom form or the default one

I now have the strangest behavior
If you open the task form
and then look at the category column
        you can pick categories

NOW try this, make new record
        enter anything
        close and save it

now find that just created category
        and select it

it brings up the new category form again

        WHY?
        who OH why?

Re: Linking record to anothe table or lookup

          Hi Cooper,
In the Category table you have these fields:
          Category C,20
          Desc C,50
          ID C,4

In Task you also have Category C,20 but ID is N,3. In your set you are trying to link the tables on the ID field which are not the same type or size. In your lookup field rules you are also using ID to link to the Category field and in ID trying to put the Category value which is too large and the wrong type.

          Try this:
          Restructure Tasks->ID to be C,4
In the field rule for Tasks->Category
Link to Category on the Category field
Delete the old map from ID to Category
Map Category->Category to fill in Task->Category (puts the linked field first - although not required)
Map Category->ID to fill in Task->ID (which need not be displayed)

The only way the Drop down lookup is going to let you add a new record to Task->Category is if you Allow Any. Which although it seems to be a bug probably isn't. If you notice the Edit option is grayed out when Drop down is selected. You can't do both - Force closest match and also allow a new entry. So you either must use the standard lookup if you want the user to be able to Edit or Add new records; or give up the restrictions which either force a match or pop up the box if no match is found. It is probably because the Drop down is bound to the field control whereas the regular lookup is not. Something about when a lookup field rule is populated is also a factor.

Re: Linking record to anothe table or lookup

In the field rules for task_table

            Categories - lookup tab

change the force closest match to allow any value.

            It should work now

There have been many posts on this forum regarding just that same thing - drop down list box on lookup.

I will try to find the last one and will post it here.
