Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dialog question

I've got A5 v.9 and I'm working on a program for work. From the help files and every thing I've read, if I use the dialog web component I should be able to generate a report. In the sample web contact app, they have a basic one. Problem is, I can't figure out exactly how to do it. The help file tells me how to use all the form buttons, but that's not what I need!

It's true, you can build some pretty sophiticated apps with just a general knowledge of programming with this product (just so you'll understand why I ask such stupid questions!) but if I don't have a step-by-step run thru the first time I do something, I tend to get confused. Any advice?

    Is this of help? http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...ur_Browser.htm

(The help file has a TON of examples and pretty good explanations, but finding what you need can be tricky!)

Yes and No. I know it's a piece of what I need to do. I've been working on this thing for so long, I think I'm just not able to grasp what I probably know. But you did give me an idea, so it's off to ponder..

      Thanks!

The only problem is that I do not know how things like arguments (and prompts) in reports would work out on WAS...

I managed to get a simple report to retrieve using the example in the help file, the problem with STEP BY STEP instructions is, I guess, that each report is so individual that you can't provide step by step guides for each case...

The most important part IMHO is getting the path right, e.g. the
        Code:
filename = report.saveas("Invoice@[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\invoice.set", "pdf", filter, order, filename, .f.)
as well as passing the arguments in correctly...

What *exactly* are you trying to achieve?

          Re: Dialog question

I work for a Parent Training Organization and we keep track of contacts, trainings we do, comments from participants, meetings, etc. All kinds of things. We work with several different grants and they want to be able to check on data perodically and at grant reporting time.

Also, to see if consultants are meeting goals, so it's a lot of data. I want these reports to get selective data from the data bases. There are about 13-14 consultants and and they fill out meeting request forms to get their meetings approved. I'd like one of those reports to generate where every one is on a certain day.

So does that help, or was it more than you really wanted to know?

Thanks, that is helpful - as and of itself, this is something that can be achieved in V8 just the same... as long as it is the Enterprise edition IF you are using an SQL back end.

What you do is design the report, based either on DBF files or on a SQL datasource, in the desktop part of A5... the "Enterprise Reporting" tutorials and instructions in the help files should be useful there: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...ting_Title.htm

Once you get a report working in your developer copy, you can start thinking about allowing web users to view them, too.

How you proceed from there really depends on how many parameters (arguments) you need to pass to a report. It might be easier to just use an A5W page and the AJAX Javascript libraries to dynamically generate a "View Report" Link depending on a user's selection of criteria in a form, but it really depends on your needs!

When you publish your web files, make sure to check the "publish Database Library Files..." checkbox. Also, you need to make sure the path to where the database files on the server are kept is specified correctly - under "Aliases" in the web publishing profiles...
