Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    HTML Newbie - Translation Please?

    I am reading the Web Publishing Tutorial and noticed it gets very quickly into HTML without much explanation of the tags used.

    In particular how is this part in red to be translated:

    <body>
    <p>&nbsp;</p><table<t
    </body>

    What I see is that <p> does not always require </p> and also <br> seems to be some kind of command like a crlf.

    Where can I find more info - that is easily understood?

    http://www.w3schools.com is a very good resource for a wide range of programming terms, including htm.

    The <p>&nbsp;</p> can be read as new paragraph, a blank space, end of paragraph. Its common for me to go in to source and remove many of these to tighten up my page. Alpha always includes a <p>&nbsp;</p> on every new A5W page, and I always manually remove them. I suspect that's why you are asking. <p>'s are also added at various times depending on what formatting you apply. <br> is html for line break as you suggest.

        Re: HTML Newbie - Translation Please?

        Many of the html tags are paired, that is, they require an open tag <b> and a close tag </b>; some are unpaired which means that they do not require (and some do not even have) a close tag, <hr> for example. Having said that, the newer, more demanding version of html - xhtml - requires the close tag.

        In addition to this, different browsers interpret html differently. With some browser, you can sometimes get away with not using certain close tags. One browser might say "Oh, here's a new open paragraph, but the previous paragraph isn't closed, so I'll be nice and close it." Another browser might not be that nice. Besides the differences between brands of browsers, you have differences between versions within the same brand. Lot's of confusion and frustration.

        The safest this to do is to always use a close tag. That way there is no confusion and the browser will be happy.

        If you use a break tag (<br>, whatever follows starts on the very next line. If you want a blank line between paragraphs, you need to use a paragraph tag. Multiple blank lines can be achieved by simply using multiple sets of paragraph tags (open and close pairs). Since some browsers interpret a simple open paragraph followed immediately by a close paragraph tag, most people who write html code 'trick' the browser by forcing a blank space between the open and close paragraph tags as Steve indicated. All browsers understand that and interpret it correctly.

        I won't tell you that certain html tags force a blank line between table elements automatically, without the paragraphs tags because that would add to the confusion.;)
