Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Please help a newbie if you can.

I am a new user of Alpha Five and need help.

What would be the best solution to implement the following scenario:

I have 2 tables. One contains suppliers per location and the other contains orders.

A form will be used to enable the user to select a supplier.

When the user selects a location, he should be able to see all available suppliers at this location and select one only.

Thanks for your help. Best Regards :)

    Djamal,
To help us understand the volumes that you will have, how many locations would there be and how many suppliers per location, maximum, would there be?

      Hello Mike,

      Thanks for your reply.

There will be hundreds of locations and something like 10 suppliers per location (max).

      Kind Regards - Djamal

        Hi Djamal,
Take a look at this little sample I made up - it is all done in the lookup field rules for orders. The OnWrite event for the location field sets a variable vLoc.

This is the session variable defined for the orders table that gets the value of the location selected and then filters the supplier table so you only see the suppliers for that location in the lookup.

        Hope it helps.

            Hi Djamal,
Here is an example for you that has a bit of higher coding, but I prepared it for you so you might see the possibilities. There are two different methods exemplified. On is present twice, one as action scripting with some needed in-line xbasic (red button) and one all xbasic (blue button) The second is all xbasic in a user-defined function (green button). I use both method depending upon need. For more explanation, please ask, instead of my writing a bunch of illegible explanation that might not be understood. Enjoy.

Mike those are great examples! I have to ask you though...what does the word "newbie" mean to you? :D

                  Well Robin,
Newbie means someone who needs alot of guidance and shown what is possible in the endeavour they have chosen to take. He didn't ask what was the easiest to accomplish or what was the simplest to achieve:
What would be the best solution to implement the following scenario
Example of "best" possibilities is what I believe he was asking for. Receiving things well beyond my comprehension has pushed me to learn A5. Both of the methods in that example are ones I received as examples early in my tenure. I saved them, studied them, and have mostly come to understand the code. The one written with action scripting & duplicated as xbasic fits closest to his level. The other well beyond, but I was still thankful to have received it when I had no idea how it worked as a template for learning, and use. To this day I still haven't figured out the exact interplay of all the pieces of the Alphasport multiselect box on the Customer form. But I still steal it off Alphasport and use it within my applications. There is code I have captured in my Code library that folks have posted that I am still wrestling with. The incomprehension becomes comprehension when you have it to read and wrestle with, if so inclined. But is must first be received. So, that is my explanation for why I put it out there.

Mike I do agree with your pattern for how we struggle to learn new things. I guess I was thinking in terms of baby steps - like learning how to use the lookup feature. Hope you did not take offense - I have learned from you!
