Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Emails not sending

Have a couple of programs written that do some customer processing and then send and email. Everything works fine except the actuall sending of the Emails, but only from a couple of machines. All the machines are setup the same and have the proper SMTP settings in the View -> Settings -> Email section. What's making this difficult is that the machines that aren't sending are also not giving any kind of error messages. So fo all practical purposes it looks like the email sent but it never gets to the other end. I know my code is good because it works on a few other machines that are using the same build version. PC and network settings are all the same as well so I know that isn't the issue. Any ideas what else I might try?

Is there another email application like outlook express on the machines to test whether an email from that application operates? I have the same problem at my work. A5 seems to send an email, but it doesn't go through, yet I know it is the firewall or something through the wireless system because outlook express doesn't work either.

We use Groupwise which sends fine. I tried loading Outlook on a couple machines and was able to send messages through as normal but still not anything from Alpha.

        Tom,

1 have you set up a basic app with email and tried it yourself? I mean, not the normal app you use. Just a quick dirty little app?

2 is there some firewall/spamblocker/anything on the machines blocking alpha?

3 is there a cc in the email so you can see if it sends the cc comes back to the same machine(you send it to yourself). This helped with a few i had problems with. My out going was from eagle@ and the cc was back to the same as the out going. It also sent to another email too.
found I couldn't recieve either. Had a firewall that was blocked for one computer. No one knew it was there. Other machines somehow went through(????).

          Re: Emails not sending

Is this using the normal Alpha Email client or using Alpha to send from the default Email client? I am asking because some Email clients have settings that prevent Emails from being sent by third party programs.

            Re: Emails not sending

I would try both. Have had great success right from alpha.

I would make a quick db and table, populate a few emails in the table that are my own, make a button for emailing and sit with it for a bit. Do it as generic as possible so all errors show up.

I am going to have to do this with a client in a couple days. They can recieve, but can't send. Odd thing is they downloaded a virus program, deleted it because they had problems, uploded my program, installed it, can't send, do not remember which virus prog they used. I bet they tried several. Now I have to redupe it and fix it because it, of course, my fault....

If it is what I think, they know a bill is coming. Better to keep a customer though.

              Re: Emails not sending

Yes I wrote a quick little troubleshooting app with two scripts. One prompts for an Email address to send to and the other is just hardcoded to send to me. Have checked the firewall settings and nothing appears to be getting blocked. I have tried using both Alpha email client and Outlook client with no luck. As far as the cc trick goes I opened my email on the same machine I was sending from and hardcoded a cc address with no luck to either.

                Just figured this one out!

Had to turn off Access Protection in our McAfee Antivirus. I'm running two machines side by side, one sends and one doesn't (didn't). Brought up the On-Access stats window and saw that ever time I tried to send from the 2nd machine it would block access to the port. Turned it off and everything seems to send fine now.

Glad you got this sorted - it's difficult to work with different machines being set up differently!
