Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Connecting to Quickbooks the first time

I just downloaded the trial version of QReportBuilder. I am trying to connect to Quickbooks and refresh data and I get this error message:

Could not create ResultSet from DataSource definition.

Could not connect to Database. Error reported was:

    Database API specific error

Your database has returned the following error code and description to Alpha Five.
Consult your database documentation for further information.

    10041 - '[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed
    SQL State is: IM006
[QODBC] QB Begin Session Failed. Error = 80040408, Could not start QuickBooks.

    SQL State is: 00000'

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Gail

    Gail

The system is designed to have QuickBooks running and accessing the currently open company file.

You can modify that for tables that can be refreshed without QBs open, when you decide which tables you desire.

But to get most users up and running quickly, it's easiest to have
QB open and running. It's somewhat faster that way also..

    Hope that helps.

Re: Connecting to Quickbooks the first time

      Al,

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I did have QBs open as well as the file and I tried it in a multi-user and single-user mode and still received that same message.

I would call into the webinar on Thursday, but unfortunately I am not able to this week.

Do you have any ideas about what else might be causing this?

      Thanks,
      Gail

            Al,

A bit more information after carefully watching the failure happen. Although QB is open and the database is open, it appears to me that QReportBuilder believes that QB is closed. As I said, I have tried single and multi-user modes. The data itself is on the local hard drive, although I could move it to the server if you feel that might help.

            Thanks again,
            Gail

Re: Connecting to Quickbooks the first time

I am receiving the exact error as well.

I am running QB Enterprise v.8. Data is on a network drive. QB is installed locallally on an Vista workstation.

I downloaded the demo this morning - logged into QB as administrator - run the QReportBuilder - perform refresh and connection is not established and the same message that Gail receives is noted.

              Please advise.

              Thank you.

                Gail/Robert

I just connected QRB to QB Ent 8 already running on the machine and refreshed the company table. It worked fine.

Let's break this down into steps.

                1. Start QuickBooks
                2. Start QRreportBuilder
                3. Build a new QRreportBuilder project.
                4. Refresh only the company table in the new project.

I noticed that there are updates to QuickBooks available for Ent 8. Have you loaded those updates?

I have followed all of your steps EXACTLY. Like Robert, I am running Vista Business. All updates to QB have been previously installed.

Are you both running the US version of QuickBooks or another country version?

I'm running XP and don't have a copy of VISTA loaded to test with.....

But I'm curious about the country version of your QB...

                    Edit:

Also, are you using a standard windows user or an admin user? I'm reading that a standard user is required..... (I love VISTA....)

I am having this same problem, and have tried to mimick the step by steps given here by Al.

I am running Vista Business, full updates for Quickbooks Pro 2008.

Re: Connecting to Quickbooks the first time

QReportBuilder uses the Intuit QuickBooks SDK to connect to QuickBooks. A requirement of that SDK is having UAC turned on in Vista. This is done under the Control Panel->Users Acounts->User Accounts->Turn User Acoount Control On or off

Ever since we changed the Admin password in Quickbooks, QReportBuilder hasn't refreshed any tables. The ODBC connector works well but we cannot refresh anything. Is there something I'm missing? HELP!

                            Faisal,
Are you getting any errors when a refresh is tried??

Also, if you cannot connect to refresh a table, then how is it you say that the connection via ODBC is good? Have you tried just ONE table to see if works? Tried maybe a different table? Made certain that any forms and such that are based on the tables to be refreshed are closed....just a precaution really.

Correct. Refreshing doesnt work. Refreshing just one table thru Refresh History I get a big Failed message. when I select all, QReportBuilder freezes and I have to force quit. i went as far as uninstall/reinstall QReportBuilder but no dice! I can check again to make sure none of the tables are open within Quickbooks. The "quickbooks data" ODBC is loading and reloading info from QB just fine.
