Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Checked my settings - I disabled background checking.

Went to the registry to make sure that it was disabled - it was.

Turned off my computer (I always like to get a fresh start after I know the registry was changed).

      Turned my computer back on.

Clicked on my Alpha icon (for one of my versions). Alpha splash screen comes up - still get the white screen.

Still at a loss - have your turned off your computer and then tried it again to see if the white screen really goes away? If not suggest you try that.

I was really hoping that it would work - my old eyes can't handle that much glare from the white screen. :)

        Re: Login screens not clearing

I am still getting a white screen at startup.
When my applications loads the first time each day, about half way through the splash screen (based on position of progress bar) the background goes from gray to white. It looks just like the background on this message board.

It only happens during first start each day.

I'm using build 3089 in all installations. I don't get a white screen, but the splash closes too soon, and I get a grey background, as I am hiding the controlpanel in the runtime. If the splash screen would stay open until it had finished loading, would be better.

I am running build 3156. My startup screen turns white even when I startup my development machine (before any applications load)

It's not causing any issues, other that the screen changing color and making my splash screen look strange at startup.

It is ridiculous that we should have to spend so much time and effort to try and find a resolution for such a small but irritating issue.

                Re: Login screens not clearing

I have been trying various things to see what might affect this annoyance. I load my A5 apps from a shortcut with a text file and added these lines to it:

                -nodebug
                -command=ui_yield()

I am not sure that the nodebug is necessary, but the ui_yield() I think has done the trick. Maybe someone else could try it. The autoexec modification didn't seem to do anything and the white screen seems to be occurring before it is run, so I thought I would try this.

Also the double buffering that ver 8 does seems to add 2 instances of Alpha to the task menu. When I have a crash and do the ctrl+alt+del thing, I have to close down both of them - has anyone else noticed this?

                  Robin

I added the command ui_yield() to the startup script (along with nodebug).

I then logged off my screen and logged back in as a different user. Then I logged off again as that user and then logged back in as myself.

Clicked on my startup icon - same deal, white screen and now in the last couple of weeks when my login dialog opens and you enter proper User and password, the dialog disappears and leave a gray box. I noticed this since a windows update was installed on my computer both here at home and on the computers in work.

I was really hoping that you had found the holy grail of a workaround to get rid of that white screen.

Thanks for keeping on the search.

                  Tom Baker

As far as the duplicate appearances of a5, I have not run into that unless I double click my start up icon in the task bar.

Me too :) It didn't work but once... I thought that perhaps by keeping this thread alive it might eventually get this issue some attention. Sometimes embarrassment will work...

                        Re: Login screens not clearing

I sent in a bug report months ago. James from Alpha was not able to duplicate this problem initially. Later, he confirmed the problem and apparently sent it to the development team, presumably to be corrected. That's the last I heard from Alpha. As we all know, this problem has yet to be corrected.
The screen turning white is not only unsightly, it's downright unprofessional. The client of your apps cannot be impressed looking at something that OBVIOUSLY doesn't work properly. And that's the first thing they see!!! Maybe we have to get Richard directly involved in this.

                          Re: Login screens not clearing

I really don't think that Alpha is supporting Version 8 anymore.

In a recent post in the version 8 forum - Selwyn advised a V88 problem was a bug and it would fixed in the next V9 patch - no mention of fixing it in V8.

                          http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=73733

So I take that to mean that while bug reports for version 8 will be accepted, the fixes will be made in version 9 if the same problem exists there - NOT IN VERSION 8.

                          That is just my opinion.

But I agree it is very unprofessional to have your app load with a white screen -it just glares unprofessionalism.

                            Tom,
I read that thread also and think it was simply a mistake....I would find it very odd that Alpha would still sell a version that they are no longer supporting. They do not seem to be that sort of company in any dealings I have seen or experienced....but then I have not actually seen any bug fixes recently either which does bring up the question as to why. A patch for version 8 is rather overdue, I would think, and the number of bugs I have seen submitted and verified in the past few months would seem to justify one.

A side note--I would also think that Alpha would automatically check version 8 for any verified version 9 bug and vice-versa and fix them both..but am not certain this is happening and so whenever I read about a bug in version 9 I check my version 8 to see if it is also present there (and then send in a separate bug report for it).

I hope you are right - I'm not ready to fully migrate my apps to Version 9 and would like to see an update to version 8.

By the way, if you log on to Alpha Software only Version 9 shows in the opening screens. If you do not know to go to the Alpha Store and click on Alpha Five products you would not know that version 8 is still selling.

Again I hope you are right.

                                Hi all,

I have been watching this thread a long time and still don't know what white space you are talking about?

Are you getting a whitespace from a log in to the alpha using security? If so, sorry to bother you.

I do not use their security, but my own. My login looks like below. It does pop up the main alpha window for about a second(not white). I tired this in v7 v8 v9(note: v9 is a lot faster)

If you are not using alpha security, lets find out what the diff is.
