If you have a read only grid (no editable fields) and the permissions are to always allow viewing the grid, then in Internet Explorer you just right-click on it and there is an "Export to Excel" option (that's not just for Alpha 5!).

That's interesting, but if you have more than one page then you have to do each page separately.

Personally I'd just have a link on the page that then opens a read only version of the grid, with all items showing (e.g. on one page)...

Yes, but if have more than you can fit on one page then you have to do it for each page, which is fine, it's not a big deal. But you can't export all records on more than one page at one time

Which is why I would have a link on the "Properly formatted" (e.g. multi-page) grid that opens a "quicksave" version that has all the items on one page.

Having said/typed that, you asked for direct export but I would think the more elegant option would be to save a report as XLS, move it to the session folder for the user and either open (response.redirect) or allow them to save it...

I haven't tried it with Excel reports yet I'm afraid, but will do soon!
