Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Have a look at the web application demo that ships with Alpha5 - it's all there, the only thing I changed was change pdf to xls (only works in Version 9 of course).

Also, in a dialog, have a look at the "Server Events" in "Properties" - there is a genie that lets you select the report etc. - all you then have to do is change txt or pdf to xls and you're done. (I will submit the omission of the XLS choice as a bug report since this should be included in version 9!)

The full instructions are here: http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...ur_Browser.htm

(Just replace pdf with xls where needed, as I have done above)

You too, I hope I haven't confused you - the instructions in the online help are for adding this code to an a5w page, I haven't tried inserting the same with the genie in the server events options for a dialog!

Re: Can you export from a Grid to excel ?

You know, I guess we should try to find a way to press a button on a gird (after searching the records that you need to display) This is important, otherwise you have to do the filtering at the time you generate the report, which means you have to ask the user again to re-enter the same criteria that they used viewing the grid.

so, do your search, press a button to export to excel, you're done.

Sure you can use page variables from the grid search instead of using a dialog, you just have to study the help files and the web app sample I mentioned above to figure out how to do that.

Andrea - did you test this changing of pdf or txt to "xls"? It does not say anywhere in the documentation that you can just swap out xls for a recognized value. When you swapped out xls, did you get a valid xls file?

It works as I mentioned a few posts above where I popsted the amended scripts from the "Save as PDF" help file page - my motto is always "if it isn't in the documentation then try it anyway" - works for pretty much anything in my WAS page scripts aside from the UI_ functions, even if the help file says you can only use it in desktop apps :)

Also, I just heard back from Selwyn to say they fixed the bug in it not showing up in the report type selections in the dialog control's print report genie.

edit this file in your a5v9 program folder:
                    WebComponentGenies\Print_Report[aftervalidate].Genie

look for this section of code, and add 'xls' to the list

                    dim rpt_type_list as c
                    rpt_type_list = <<%list%

                    dim rpt_type as c = "PDF"

I agree it works. When I tested it produced a Alpha printer driver error. But worked on subsequent trials.

Here is the original post I mentioned on how to export to excel using xbasic.

The only reservation I have is that, PDF or reports in general shouldn't be treated like a worksheet, even though you could create a tabular report that has fields and records.

What do you mean? You are the one that wanted to export data to Excel! :)

                            You misunderstood my point.

I and many want to export to excel, but I meant to say it would be much easier to the user while working with data on a grid that display columns and rows already looks like a worksheet to just press the button to export the data.
I personally always separate reports from worksheets or databases, when I think of reports, I consider that as final place for the data, no further manipulation.

Steve, thanks for the demo, that is exactly what I meant, very nice job.

Andrea, thanks for all the help, you gave me some insights on new things I could explore.

Oh I see, yes I do think it would be a nice feature for A5 to allow you to insert such a control into a grid without needing to hard-code the export specifically!
