Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: search on a grid question

This page gets called from a link field on a summary page.
in the screen shot if press DETAILS it calls the records of the grid.

I suspect in that case that the characters in the URL are coming from the link - can you post the code used to generate the Details link, and the full URL of the same account grid (once you clicked on the link) for both the server & the other machine you are testing this on? (I can't see the whole URL on the screenshots you posted)

If security has been enabled on the server since you first made this, have you

      a) Enabled proper access to both pages (e.g. set security permissions & are logged in correctly on both machines)

      and

      b) Published the whole project again?

Re: search on a grid question

Security is not active on this one, and I deleted all the published files and re-published just in case.

I attached a sample of the database including web projects.

        Thanks for all the help

I will try this out later on, thanks for posting the sample.

Hm... tried this now but to be honest I can't see how these tables even relate do each other - the field from the summary table that you use as a filter of the detail page doesn't have any matching fields in the other two tables:

There's a summary operation that creates that field in the month summary table. It's the last field

                1) At least in your sample, the last field in the summary table is nothing like any field in the other two tables (see screenshots 1 & 2/3)

                2) The field you are filtering the detail grid by does not appear in the search fields in the detail grid component! (screenshot 4)

Re: search on a grid question

Because I built only a sample of the database for posting, I didn't run the summary operation which creates the matching field (Key) in the detailed.

                  here's the corrected one.
In any case if I use only the detailed page it acts the same way without considering the link.
If you publish and try to search for exchange from the detailed web page, do you get the results that I see ?

Thanks for that - I should have realised that! I think I can see what the problem is, although I have no idea why it works on the server in the first place! I bet if you add the key field to the search on the detail page, and pass in the key as an argument instead of trying to tack on a filter from the link on the summary page, it will work...

Re: search on a grid question

OK I have tried this now - it seems to work fine: http://www.charlesworth.biz/SAMP/comm_summary.a5w

But I can see how the way the filter is used in the link on the summary page could cause some problems - I presume that when the "Has Filter?" option is used, then Alpha 5 expects the target page to HAVE a filter - which it doesn't.

If you *must* use a filter - as opposed to adding Key to the searchable fields (this would also allow you to make sure that users are aware of the fact that the details they are viewing are filtered, and it allows Clear Search to REALLY clear the search, too), try adding an argument called Key to the data source definition on the Detail Grid and then build a filter like this: "Key=:Key .or. Len(:Key) =0".

A more user friendly way of filtering the details page (if you had a read only display of just one account/entry, a filter would be great, but this is a grid with a search of its own you are linking to) would be to add Month, Year and Account to the search fields of the Detail page, and then instead of using Has Filter in the detail link, use Has Variables and specify the variables in the same way they show up in the URL if you search for them in the Details grid, e.g. comm_detail_S_MTH and comm_detail_S_YEAR for month and year.

This makes it explicitly clear to the user that the detail view they are seeing is filtered by Account A, Month X and Year Y :)

Re: search on a grid question

OK here a sample site that allows the user to filter both the summary and the detail grid by year, account & month, uses these 3 in the link to the Detail grid and displays what has been filtered by in the search of the grid on the detail grid page:
                        http://www.charlesworth.biz/EDITED/comm_summary.a5w

Instead of having to rely on a summary function, it uses a calculated field that uses the month & year in both the summary and detail tables - this is used in the search fields on both pages, and also used to "filter" the detail grid in the link on the summary page.

I have attached the modified zipped database for reference, to explain the way I set up the searches etc.

I will download and learn from this, apparently it works fine from your page link.
Thank you so much for the time you spent on this, greatly appreciated.

Glad to see it worked fine when you looked at it, having a bit of a problem trying to get two projects (SAMP and SAMP_EDITED) to run without security on our WAS which has security enabled, so hopefully the sample DB I uploaded will be enough - I don't know if both links I posted will work!

I hope the sample DB is easy to understand, I am starting to look into filtering results in grid a bit more myself & am sure I will run into similar odd results!

One of your postings didn't work because of security issues, the second one did.

Now the only issue I saw in the edited sample that the detailed page needs to have a search on the date not on the calculated date (YEAR and MONTH).
The summary is fine because you need ACCT, YEAR and MONTH.

The detailed page needs 2 search keys... EXCH and DATE THAT INCLUDES THE DAY.
So I'm just going to use the correct date field to replace the calculated date that you have.
Do you see a problem with that ?

I see you just hid the row of that search key (date.)
