Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Andrea ,

Thanks for that puretext link. I have always copied into notepad, then cut & paste to the target. Will try this one out.

You're welcome, I came across it after struggling to paste into Excel, and later trying to paste text from Word to Frontpage - it's the only thing so far that has worked for me! Just put it in your startup folder and map a shortcut key combo to it, default is Windows Key + V I beilieve... then use it in any windows app that allows pasting :)

        To all - FYI

I have agreed with Richard to do a small set of Ajax video tutorials. I don't expect they will be step by step but hopefully for those of you prepared to put in the yards re A5 & Javascript they will point you in the right direction.

Details will be advised, however since I don't get paid directly for this service please do not hassle me re time frame etc.

        In the meantime check out

to see some of my latest A5 (using Ajax) project.

As far as the line breaks in javascript in an a5w page is concerned, I cannot reproduce this consistently but can confirm that, especially when you preview a page (in WYSIWYG mode), edit & save it, the line breaks in Javascript in the page do not seem to be honoured/upheld.

I know this has been said many times already, but just for the record, and in my opinion, there is no way a typical developer new to web apps can understand what is going with the built-in ajax functionality on v9 server tool, by reviewing the sample web server application. I just cannot see where any of the built in functionality lives.

              Hi All,

I'm just tagging this on the end here, I know there is no "Alpha 5 for Dummies", but is it worth getting "Ajax for Dummies"? Or will that only confuse things even more?

Keven, to see all the Web samples open Alpha, select More Databases and navigate to C:\Program Files\A5V9\Samples\webappserverdemo\web_applications_Demo.adb and follow the instructions from the opening page.

I believe it would confuse matters. The Javascript libraries take care of most of what you have to code by hand in AJAX, and those libraries won't be documented in a book about AJAX.

The Javascript formatting issue has been fixed in the build before the latest one:

                  http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/a...easenotes.html
HTML Editor - Javascript in <Script> Tag - Previously, if you had defined some Javascript code in a <script> tag in your HTML or A5W page and you then switched to WYSYWIG view and then back to Source view, the formatting and comments in the Javascript would be lost. Now, all formatting and comments in the Javascript is correctly retained when you switch tabs.
