Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web Roadmap

Any chance the company would be willing to occasionally publish general roadmaps indicating:
    - Where you see the product going
    - What key features you might include in the next release

    [Especially on the Web side]

Some other tool vendors do this, and it's very helpful.

    Whatdyasay? :)

      Re: Web Roadmap

Just because you post this, doesn't mean you're going to get a response. In fact, I'd be surprised if you did.

Yup, we all want to know where things are headed, but as Joyce Meyer (look her up if you need to) would say, "enjoy today".

In the past, Alpha made some promises that they couldn't quite match. Stuff like the AJAX stuff that once upon a time was supposed to be in, I think, version 7 or 8. It's not their fault - they're really pushing for stuff that no one's done and getting it right to their satifaction took longer than they thought. But when their public predictions don't become reality, people can get a bit huffy and then ya gotta deal with that.

Alpha's a privately-owned company, happy to stay that way, and will give all of us nice little presents for years to come. They just won't tell us in advance what all of them they might be, and that's OK.

As the new developments get closer to reality, they tell us about them because they're excited too. Stuff like the cluster server, for instance.

If there's something missing in the current package for you, say so and I'm sure it'll be considered in the pipeline.

        Re: Web Roadmap

Alpha does not necessarily monitor this message board, so you might not get an answer here directly from 'them'. You can pretty much know what is coming by watching this message board, reading all of Richard's blog entries and by developing a relationship with one or more long-time consultants.

In my opinion, that informal process is a better avenue than laying it out on paper. Based on my observations here, it's a short hop from Roadmap to defacto promise, followed closely by frustration when what is delivered does "measure up", is "late" or not the flavor expected. In quotes because its not necessarily true.

Edit: Did not see Steve's post until I posted; but I see we said exactly the same thing!

Ok, it's clear it won't happen.

But, this is managed quite successfully elsewhere. There's a big difference between publishing a high level road map to indicate what they're thinking, v.s. committing specifically to particular features in a particular release.

The former is manageable and very useful. The latter is, agreed,
          never wise.

            Re: Web Roadmap

Like I say to my wife almost every Saturday morning when she asks "what are you going to do this weekend". I say "clean up a little", which to her means I will be mopping the floors and cleaning the garage, but to me means I may take a shower between viewing sporting events, maybe.

But I take your point and often wanted to form some sort of user advisory process, which proabably would make them cringe. But I also think Alpha's on the right path so I don't worry about it too much. I have enough of a job taking advantage of what's already in the package.

Thank you Steve!! I really needed a chuckle like this right now! :) Nice to know others have similar issues!

But for a small-ish company, sometimes you can't deliver a brilliant product AND keep all the marketing and previews etc. up to date... sometimes, too, developments happen that are not anticipated. I'd rather just have a great product than a lot of hot air about what they are planning X years down the line...

However, there were some very interesting posts in the earlier days and weeks of V9 being publically available a couple of months back... I will try to dig them out, they may not be relevant as they relate mostly to porting desktop apps straight to the web but they were very insightful I thought....

                Update:

Check out Jerry's post towards the end of this thread: http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=72408

                  Re: Web Roadmap

I certainly would like to see an overall statement of direction from Alpha software. Obviously you cannot promise specifics too early out, but in general, what is the direction? Some elements like integration into IIS server and compiled xbasic are clearly stated. And earlier, adding Ajax capability. And of course, the direction to support building apps for handheld devices.
More info like this is very helpful in selecting the tool and keeping pumped on its future.

P.S. Important that I post this here as I have been accused of being hypocritical by requesting road maps for Microsoft Access (which I continue to live and use to build desktop/LAN apps)with no evidence of my doing so for Alpha Five. Now back to just learning what is already in Alpha Five.

This isn't all that old. I'm sure they've made some adjustments since June of last year but still very helpful stuff:
