Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cant copy and paste from A5V7

    Hi All,

I have an application running on a network with about 50 users. They are telling me that they are are trying to copy and paste from RTF fields and very often the text is not being captured. The implication that there is something wrong with my application, so I must find a solution.

Has anyone else had this experience and what was done to rectify it?

      Hi Dave,

I know this is old, but a new issue has arisen.

Seems the copy and paste problem has gone away, so I assume it was a local machine issue.

I dont know if this is linked, on the odd RTF memo in random records, they get a Hanging Paragraph. Once this is in, any new text that gets added to the RTF Memo, it is in the same format.

What I cant see is how to edit the RTF Memo to remove the Hanging Paragraph, any suggestions?

The vers 9 help file indicates the user can define "Rule Styles" for paragraphs. If the "First Line Indent" in a ruler style is negative I believe that will cause a hanging indent in the paragraph to which that particular ruler style applies. Not sure what's available or possible with vers 7.

Have they defined special "ruler styles"? Can they not reformat the text with a different "ruler style"?

          Hi Tom,

Please see thumbnail, this is the offending record.

As you can see text has disappeared where it looks like the hanging paragraph is. Also the text is not lined up to the Tab mark on the ruler. Which means the the Tab is not being used when typing in.

Style is set to Normal, I dont think they know what to do with that option.

This does not happen to every record, but once it has started then all subsequent text entries suffer this way only on this record. It then happens again on another new record some other time.

          I'm foxed at the moment.

Re: Cant copy and paste from A5V7

Keith, I'm no expert on RTF memo fields. Maybe others will have specific suggestions for you. Here are a few "straws" you might grasp to try to rule out the possibility of a hardware issue:

            - does ths only happen on certain machines?
            - are they using wireless keyboards?
            - is this happening while typing, or while cutting and pasting?
            - does it continue if you change keyboards?
            - have you to tried to reformat a paragraph that contains a hanging indent, using a ruler style that does not?

It seems to me that something is changing the formatting tags embedded in the rich text stream. Have you examined the binary codes in the memo field text itself to see if you can see what changes when the hanging indents begin?

            Later...

Keith, I tried to deliberately format paragraph with a hanging indent and succeeded by customizing the ruler style. I wonder if your customer has been modifying the ruler styles in their RTF editor? My testing was done with vers 9. I was not happy with how the RTF editor behaved when ruler styles were switched. I got inconsistent results. Perhaps because I'm such a RTF novice. Hope the attached screen shots help unscramble this for you.

            Still later on ...
Keith, search the entire message board for threads dealing with RTF memo fields and rulers or styles. You'll find a number of seemingly unresolved issues. I don't use RTF memo fields in my apps so I can't help further. Perhaps its time to put your users back on plain vanilla memo fields?

Re: Cant copy and paste from A5V7

              Hi Tom,

Thanks for your input on this.

At this time I am unable to answer the following questions
              - does ths only happen on certain machines?
              - are they using wireless keyboards?
              - is this happening while typing, or while cutting and pasting?
              - does it continue if you change keyboards?
              - have you to tried to reformat a paragraph that contains a hanging indent, using a ruler style that does not?
I am waiting for a reply from my client regarding some of these points.

I did get to look at their RTF Memo and noticed that the latest record I've been asked to look at, did have a different Style attributed to it. Changing it does not rectify the odd format that is there.

What is the most curious part in all this, is, why text is being chopped off?

Even your text was complete with the indent.

He will not go back to plain Memo as he likes the use of formating text with font, size and colour.

Everyone gets to pick their own poison I guess. Maybe if he contents himself with a single style he won't have any more trouble. ???
