Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

DD* files created for SE* files?

Back in 2006 this happened to 3 of my sets, which I thought was just a fluke from converting between versions or something, as it never seemed to happen again. I have had files appear in the wrong directory from time to time from dragging and dropping them. But this just happened to another set which I zipped on 04/30/08 using ver 8. Anybody have any ideas what could have created these files? I'm thinking it might have something to do with copying a form from one table or set to another.

I've noticed this too. Create a MySet.set, and get the MySet.ddd, MySet.ddm and MySet.ddx. Dunno why.

See this as these files are the life stay of the development environment

No Chris. When you create a set you shouldn't get these other files. All you should get are the .set, .sem and the .sex files.

Well I sent them all to the recycle bin since they seem to be mostly empty. A text viewer showed "z's" in one file and some internal words that didn't match any of my fields or layout names in another. The binary portion was all "0's". This apparently first started in ver 7 since I have only had ver 8 a couple of months. I have other sets created recently and this didn't occur, so it is some random thing...

The .set, .sem and the sex files are for the set and not all the tables in database are neccessary part of the set structure see dummy tables for instance as a menu container they dont usually contain much.

This is still happening to my sets. I just edited a set-based form and the DD* show a date change to today! What is Alpha doing with these files that is supposedly doesn't use for sets???

I reported this as a bug a year or so ago. Never got a response. Happens in v7 also. It's a bug. Delete the SOBs.

There is another bug too, somewhat related. If you have an adb and you move it to a different folder, and if it is still listed in the contropanel file menu dropdown - and you select it (where it is still pointing to the old path), A5 creates a dummy (i.e. empty database). Reported that one too...Gggrrrr!!!!

You know Peter I thought it was in v7 too but didn't notice til I migrated to v8. I did delete them (again) and the sets involved seem to be ok. I hate that they won't fix these things...
