Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Thus, I am trying to stay with the most basic of javascript.
Good point - I can heartily recommend Opera Mini though, it seems pretty good at running AJAX stuff and is free for some operating systems (such as Symbian).

As far as the pre-loading issue, I need to fill approx 10 to say 14 fields, and I would be content with the drop down showing just say 4 or 5 columns with perhaps 20 to 30 records. I am not sure, but I think that would not be a major hit on speed - I could be completely wrong on this, but what do you think, given the additional details I have just provided?
It shouldn't be a major hit on speed, but you have to consider that all 10-14 fields for each of those records have to be pre-loaded and stored within the page, where everyone who right-clicks to "View Source" can read them. Obviously since the data is filled in visibly anyway it's not "top secret" stuff though, just means you'd have to use a fair few hidden inputs and suchlike, and learn to address them correctly/name them so you get the correct results. THAT part would probably be easier in Xbasic if you have experience there, rather than having to learn the Javascript to get the naming conventions right etc.

In regard to your last paragraph, I am not sure I understand how that would solve this problem - could you explain a bit further ...
It hugely depends on what you actually need this for - is this data from old appts. used to create a new record?

Another thing to consider would be a lookup grid - this works the same as lookup tables in the field rules for dbf tables, and you can populate other fields with data from the selected record. It would be GREAT if Alpha made available a DROPDOWN display option for lookups in web grids, but alas it isn't available yet... http://www.charlesworth.biz/WAS/TextLookup_page.a5w (Again the source code for all these is in the sample & template apps with your copy of Alpha5)

      Re: Drop down boxes

Unfortunately, mini-Opera is no longer available for a Treo (which is what I use).

Also, unfortunately, lookups do not work on a Treo either, which is why I am going the drop down box route.

Thus, there I am - I need to use a drop down, and there is no built in way for a drop down to fill multiple fields, so I need to use java script to force a drop down to fill multiple fields.

So, please provide details if you would.

By the way, if there is a way without ajax to use xbasic to accomplish this please tell me how.

Bottom line is I need to use a drop down, and any way to have the drop down fill multiple fields would be great - java script or xbasic ...

That is a shame, the newest version just came out and it's great! :(

Have you considered a different PDA? ;)

You can pull the data out of the database with Xbasic, and you can use the AJAX notation to address the fields you want to fill (less complicated than using full Javascript notation), the code used on most of the AJAX samples to populate dropdowns etc. can be used to populate any dropdown on an a5w page, e.g. use of a5_html_list_populate() on the ComboBoxLookup sample page etc.

Also, I didn't make it clear with the QuickSearch option (this is from the Web Apps Made Easy book), you can do this showing just 1 record, and with editable grids too... you could then amend the grid to insert a new record instead of saving the same one....
