Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What is recommended for a VPS

Please could you advise as best as you can the minimum configuarion of a VPS to run alpha effectively? Also, could you advise in terms of bandwidth per month - say how much is 100gigBytes of bandwidth - one user editing one record or 100 users editing retrieving all day for 20 solid days?

    Thank You
    Jonathon

I think you need to just set it to a number your comforatable with, then upgrade as needed (if needed).

I use 1 Gig - and it's probably over the top.

I have a number of customers on VPS. Generally, they start out with 640 ram and the site runs correctly, but over time the greed for speed takes over. They are allmost all now at 1 gig.

These sites just use the stock bandwidth and don't have any issues, but the sites don't get a lot of hits (4000 in four months). What does matter: those sites are running SSL, so we are running two instances of the WAS with different configurations, one for the non-SSL domain and one for the SSL domain. They start out at 50k each, and over time, the size of the WAS grows. I notice when they both get to about 250k the site perceptably slows down, so a quick restart gets everything back to speed. I think you reach the threshold sooner with less ram.

        Hi Pat

Thanks for you reply. I am not totally clear. Each of your VPS's started at 640Mb but eventually ended up a 1 Gig? If so that is a great guide. Is it the WAS on its own that grows from 50K to 250K over time - doesn't that suggest a memory leak? Just not clear what the figure you mention is for. None-the-less, I am very interested.

        Thanks
        Jonathon

Thanks for you information and realising (in the main) I was talking about RAM.

            Jonathon,

Yes, I was talking about the WAS growing. I check it periodically using task manager, and there are some people who monitor it using AlwaysUp. I know Alpha is working on trying to diagnose the problem, but it's still not certain if it's the WAS or faulty code in the applications???
