Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Global setting logical field to checkbox

    I have a questionnaire database to set up to record a paper survey that has 118 checkbox answers. I am using version 7. Is there any method to globally set all logical fields as a checkbox on a form rather than me doing each one individually? Or an alternative of making logical fields display default as a checkbox rather than type-in?

    No.
    There can be only one.

      Don,
      But you can change one in design mode, Use the advanced copy from right clicking on the field and choose the style which would show as "checkbox", lasso or select all that are wanted to become checkboxes and right click and use the advanced Paste. Make sure if you have labels they are not included (ungroup). The copy will stay on the clipboard between forms as well if not all the fields wanted as checkboxes are on the same form.

        The lasso feature works well but I just recently tried to copy advanced properties and it would not set an indented checkbox style - only the default.

          Hi Robin,

          I had the same thing happen....but only at first. Afterwards I have tried MANY times to make it not work to no avail!! Works everytime now for me. I tried various things such as closing the forms and reopening, closing Alpha and restarting, not saving, saving, copying one before the other and vice-versa and still works. Clueless here why what you are saying only happened but the one time for me...even so, if I had a ton of these types of properties to change I would attempt several times before doing them all manually.

              Thanks for help. Advance copy did work for some things, but not all. Stylesheets didn't work either so it appears for some settings it must be done manually. Perhaps Alpha coders should add a feature to set or change defaults on fields form properties.

                Re: Global setting logical field to checkbox

                Hate to toot my own horn but the AIMS Group Format will work for many of these things.

                There is also a routine in my AIMS Grab Bag that allows you to change the code in multiple objects all at once. For example, yesterday I had to change the code in 56 buttons from:

                <some code I wanted to keep>

                Jobs_4_chart_date()

                to:

                <some code I wanted to keep>

                DIM SHARED ps_stat as C
                Jobs_4_chart_date_bp( ps_stat, .t. )

                I did this with one "replace" operation using the "Set Event Code" action in the Grab Bag. The whole thing - including starting the routine and typing the changes - probably didn't take much over a minute. The actual update time after clicking the "OK" button was so short I wasn't even sure it ran -but it did. It's not something I use often but in situations like this it's a real sanity-saver.

                The Grab Bag also has routines for:
                - compacting only the data dictionaries (This is a great time saver for developers who don't like doing a full database compact because of the time required to pack the tables and rebuild the indexes. Packing tables and rebuilding indexes isn't necessary when just updating the application but compacting data dictionaries can sometimes solve strange problems and can often remove many megabytes of wasted space.)
                - adding passwords to all your global scripts - also works to protect global action scripts
                - comparing two scripts (handy when you have a development copy and production copy and forgot exactly what you've changed)
                - listing global scripts by the date they were revised. Sometimes you aren't sure which script you want but you know you worked on it yesterday. This lets you see the date the script was modified. (This assumes you have that turned on in your Preferences under View/Settings.) (Alpha has something for displaying recently changed scripts but this routine actually displays all scripts along with the date modified.)
                - quickly displaying "app basics" - select which item or items you want to see: table names, index names, field names, set names with/without the associated tables, layout names, operation names, script/function names.
                - and many others - 38 in all.

                  Hi Cal,
                  I am not surprised to find that this genie does much more than I have discovered. But I did try the Group formatter first to see if I could change the style to indented checkbox and did not find that style listed.

                    Hmmm, sounds like I better look into that. I didn't check but thought for sure it would be there. There are a few other things I'd like to add to bring it up to date with the newer versions of A5. Anybody know how to add 3-4 hours to a day?

                      Code:

                      dim Cal as p
                      dim global location as c

                      If location = "MI"
                        location = "HI"
                        Cal.teleport("location")
                      end if
                      (Too much Star Trek maybe?? Just did finish watching "Generations" again.)
