Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Is there a limitation on the # of characters that can be used in an email message?

    Re: Is there a limitation on the # of characters that can be used in an email message

    Mike,

    This is interesting. I thought about purchasing netmailer when I was composing some of these templates and figuring out how to get and send so many emails and especially when I had to send out 27000 emails in a short period of time(they were larger than the one I referenced above).

    I guess I wa lucky to develope my own mess.

    Why can netmailer not send a template?? It seems it would solve Glen's problem?

      Re: Is there a limitation on the # of characters that can be used in an email message

      Hi Dave,
      Maybe Netmailer has its own templates...I don't have netmailer so am only going by the help file which states toward the bottom of this link--

      http://support.alphasoftware.com/alp...fields_exposed

      Note : Netmailer does not use the email templates created through this process.
      And yes, using a template would be the way to go if possible. Otherwise use the work-a-round.

      Am still wondering how others deal with the data in a character variable once it has become a blob.

        Mike,

        I am not likely to be a candidate for netmailer, so it is pretty much a moot point.

        I have a sys that works. Think I will just stick to that for now.

        At least I know I made a good decision a while back.

        Hope ya'll figure it out, but sounds like you have the right idea.

          Mike,
          There is a variable in the "send to" part of that action script. Is the message also considered a variable, even when all it is, is text wrapped in quotation marks?

          Thanks

            Re: Is there a limitation on the # of characters that can be used in an email message

            Bill,
            From what I can determine using the Action Script email, the message text is a variable set to a list. I still have not found the reason as to why the original character dimension of the variable is referenced after it becomes a blob which in turn causes these errors. A memo field takes either a character or a blob so I do not think this is the error causing part. It is simply when the variable, once turned into a blob, is referenced later that the error is produced.

            Bill can you show me the xbasic that is produced and about when the error is produced? Or a small sample showing this maybe? I have fought with a similar problem and was able to create a way to make it work...hopefully the same will be true here.

            Unless others can let us know how!! Feel free to join in here!! :)

              Mike,
              Here is the code. Hope it's enlightening. Thanks

              'Save record in current form at parent level.
              topparent.commit()

              'Get 'Value' property of 'Email0' in Form 'Mktg_Current_Agents' .
              DIM SHARED veNow AS c
              dim shared veagent as C
              veNow = parentform:Email0.value
              veAgent = alltrim(parentform:Agent_First_Name.value)

              'Send agent specific fax form

              query.filter = "Email = Var->veNow"
              query.order = "recno()"
              'replace variables in the filter with their actual values
              query.filter = convert_expression(query.filter,"V")

              vto = veNow
              vcc = ""
              vbcc = ""
              vsubj = "Please note; NEW medical information"
              vmess1 = <<%a%
              I was talking with one of your fellow agents in the office and I learned that all of you were told you could only blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. The obvious assumption was that you couldn't continue doing blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, and that is not at all the case.
              I have, and have always had, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. The difference is, mine is still an blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. I have the freedom to work with blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blahthose branches. I have full blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. That said, I've made some changes, since we last did business, that have streamlined the process to make things even faster and easier than before. Attached is a new blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, but one you can quickly and easily change to suit your individual needs or preferences even further. Or, if you'd prefer, you can blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah online by going to www.hyperlink.com and following the links. I've also changed our business lines over to toll free numbers. My direct line is now blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and the fax line is blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
              Please update your records to reflect these changes and, as always, feel free to call me, day or night, with any questions. My blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah.
              Thanks,
              blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
              %a%
              vmess2 = alltrim(veagent) + chr(44) + crlf() + vmess1

              :Report.Send("agent fax form","RTF",query.filter,query.order,"default",vto,vsubj,vmess2,vcc,vbcc)

                Re: Is there a limitation on the # of characters that can be used in an email message

                Bill,
                Sorry but no go. I tried setting the message value to that of a rtf file, a memo file, split the memo up and then cancontenated them back inside the .send function, and a few other things. My file.writeb method was to be able to set a memo's value to a variable's value once it became a blob and works well for that....As the .send function will not take a memo when it becomes a blob my way will not work.

                Hopefully another way surfaces as this would be a common problem I would think....surprised there aren't a ton of threads and complaints regarding it actually.

                If no solution is forthcoming I would put this into the Wishlist forum which sometimes could also be known as the "I cannot believe this has not been done yet!" forum!! :)
                Mike
