Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"Store locator" in web app server page

Has anyone created a Store Locator button in the web app server (not the compenent builder)? If so, I'd appreciate hearing from you at [email protected].

Re: "Store locator" in web app server page

What exactly do you mean? A button on its own doesn't really do much, do you mean a search facility by postal code, or a map link for each store, or what?

Do you just want to open a page that shows all your stores or a map for individual stores, or do you have the stores in a database and want to allow users to enter their location and search for the nearest store?

A button in an a5w page is just a bog standard HTML form button - the page it redirects to or opens can contain grid to display a list of stores that match your search criteria, or can be hand-coded to grab and display the relevant data...

At any rate there are so many different ways of going about this and so many different ways of grabbing the data that you need to provide a bit more information if you want someone to explain how to do this for YOUR specific needs, surely?

Re: "Store locator" in web app server page

The question is about 'store locator', not buttons. You see examples of Store Locator on almost every website for a retail establishment. The method asks for your zip code or address, then shows X number of stores within Y radius. The results will be a store name, address and perhaps other information and a map with directions.

Here is a basic process. I can create a live example later this week (I need this for an application also), and it's a little complex.
      1. Your list of Stores needs to include their exact lattitude and longitude.
      2. Create a Dialog that asks for the visitors Zip Code.
      3. You need either a table containing ALL Zip Codes with their lat and lon, or use a web service whereby you can get the lat and lon dynamically (more on that if you want). You use this to get the lat / lon of the zip code your visitor provided.
      4. In the Dialog's AfterValidate event, unmark all records in the table. Then you use tbl.mark_range() to mark records that match a filter. The variables lat and lon here are for your visitor's zip code.
      5. Here's the function wtih a sample radius of 10 miles:

        tbl.mark_range("3959 * acos(cos(dtor(37)) * cos(dtor(lat)) * cos(dtor(lon) - dtor(-122)) + sin(dtor(37)) * sin(dtor(lat))) < 10)
      6. Then your AfterValidate code should open an A5W page with a Grid that is set to show only marked records.

The only problem I see with what I wrote above is that I am not sure if two web users would be able to indepently mark table records. If not, then I would use an array to gather the records that matched the filter and only show the records that were found in the array using the inlist2() function. That would probably be faster on a large table anyway.

Re: "Store locator" in web app server page

I have this routine in an application, so just to amplify a bit on Steve's email:

1.5 The latitude and longitude need to be in decimal, not degrees, minutes and seconds. Also, longitude in the US is negative, so it works better in V9 (V8 has a bug that doesn't allow negative numbers to be entered)

4.5 I use the array approach, since I only have about 50 locations. Marking records in a multiuser environment can be a bit iffy. It also allows the sort from closest to furthest and the cutoff at a particular radius to be done easily.

5.5 I display the result in an html table built in the page instead of a grid since I never know how long the list will be, and include a link to the location's individual inventory page.

If you Google "store locator code" you can also find examples of this, using SQL and PHP normally. There are also 3rd party utilities. I'd like to reproduce the example where it creates a Google map with the little ballons over each location.
