Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    application server can't start

Alpga5 and it's in-build server have worked well for some weeks. Today just like that when starting the app server I get an error: make sure no other server software takes use of this port....
I've checked port 80 with netstat, no program or service is using it, Also changing the port to e.g. 81 doesn't help. The problem started after installing the last patch, but that may be a coincidence.
Anyone has had the same problems or has any idea what to do?

    Application Server Cannot Start .....

I just upgraded to Platinum, and on attempting to load the Web Server Sample App, I'm getting the above message. I have checked port 80 - nothing using it. Changed to port 8090 - same result. Have loaded my (v8) web application, and get the same error.

    "The Server cannot be started"

    ..... any ideas ...?

Strange... I just found out that when configuring the app server to start automatically with starting Alpha5 there is no problem.... But by starting it after Alpha5 started it gives me the above error.
Not a big problem anymore, I just let it start automatically. But I'm still wondering what can cause this.

Well, thanks for your prompt reply, Henkie, and i have to say that. .....

        ...... YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!

The App Server DOES start when on auto. I can't believe we are the only two AlphaHolics in the whole World, ... nay, UNIVERSE, ... to have experienced this, or have the others thrown the PC out of the window ...?

        A million thanks anyway, Henkie - you a life-saver.

        Cheers

Or maybe we are the only two that were not smart enough to have the app server start automatically when installing Alpha5....
But still it is very strange, because up till today I had no problems at all.
Anyway John, we can get on with work!

I would suggest making a bug report so that the Alpha team knows and can respond.

                    Hello

To all who are experiencing this issue. Here at Alpha we can't seem to duplicate the problem yet. We are trying to find out what is common among your machines that might be different from ours.

Please post your system specifications here so we can try and duplicate, and fix it.

Also, I trust you don't have another instance of the server running when starting the application server, but I need to cover all the bases here, so check that to be sure.

                    Thanks,
                    John

What specifications do you need? Except for:
                      system: Windows XP SP2
                      IIS installed but disabled

                        Re: application server can't start

I would say this has started happening for me to here in the UK. If I restart the computer the App Server will start but has a habit of hanging when constructing A5W pages. After that restarting Alpha does nt resolve the issue. Only a reboot.

I will see if I can get it to be consistent when failing.

                        I am using V9 Build 1534 / 3188

                          Re: application server can't start

                          I'm using Vista 32-bit on pentium 4 /3GHz with 1Gig RAM, I'm on a domestic workgroup - (no domain), logged on as Admin, Alpha v9 /1534 /3188

I don't have any other server software running, and it may help you to know that, even though the server will start automatically with Alpha, if I stop it and try to re-start, I get the same problem and messages.

                            Re: application server can't start

This may help. I note that with the patch I now have TWO copies of my Alpha executable. The one with the most recent patch is named "A5ApplicationServer.exe" and dated 6/9 and the other is dated 3/30. The "other" one has a different name because I renamed it to "A5V9Server.exe" when I first installed V9. I've gone through several patches, this is the first patch that does not honor my renamed file, and instead installs the exe with the default name, "A5ApplicationServer.exe". (I've followed this renaming practice since first issue of V8, never had a problem.)

So, in my case AlwaysUp was trying to execute A5V9Server.Exe, which immediately fails. If I run the 6/9 file, it runs fine.
