Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: application server can't start

We've been corresponding with a few users who have reported this by email, but so far nobody has been able to give us explicit instructions to duplicate this issue. On all of our test systems so far, there is no problem manually starting or restarting the server.

If someone can give us those step-by-step details, and we can reproduce this, we will certainly fix it.

Can't really be more explicit than these threads. Same problem on Home Desktop, Laptop(s), Work PC, using mix of Vista, XP SP2,

I can relate to you my trials this evening:

      1. Booted into directory services restore mode - closed non-essential services one-by-one - no joy.
      2. Booted into full Safe Mode - same result.
      3. This may help, however - I get the problem when ANY database is loaded - if I close current database, and start/stop server while Alpha ONLY is open (no database yet loaded) then all operates OK. The minute I load (any) database, I get the problem.

Hope this helps, altho' it still loads and operates OK if set to Auto-Load.

It's only when starting the server when you try to do a live preview, or publish to localroot, that this happens for me...

          Re: application server can't start

Me too, Just installed A59 on Win XP Pro and do tutorial.
I disabled IIS so port 80 is not used anymore as stated previously in a message, even if not displayed in firewall or in DOS shell netstat command.
Even disabling Windows firewall did not help.

So far (2 minutes, no further testing) automatic start works!

But still cannot start server manually.
I need to click twice to get the red LED turn to green but turns back right away. From the Web Server setup menu, I cannot start it for one second.
!!! Maybe it is a problem at front interface for that specific item in the app.

Even while running in A5, we cannot see this port 80 by either these 2 ways. (netstat and firewll)

          If it can help:
          1) What is the use of giving a name to our server Name? (I do not see it in win firewall when it registers as Alpha Five, without port 80 displayed there?

          2) Could it be because the server needs some conditions to start such as presence of minimum a specificly named file in the root?

Opposite behavior since last A59 update

Now, today, after installing built 1561 sys built 3190:

            1) Maybe not related, but windows IIS was reactivated. So, it can happen!

            2) !!! Even if I deactivate automatic webserver start, it is always started when I start A5! (and the check box is empty).

So, Am I in an unusual behavior or A5 guys did really do a kind of dont-worry-anymore-because-we-start-it-anyway-everytime?

            3) Good news is that, once in A5 running, now I can stop and start the server.

              You'r lucky,

I use Windows XP Home edition and have the Automatic start checkbox active, but the a WAS won't start anyway.
I have no clue. The last few days it refused to start. Then, this afternoon a problems had vanished, and now They're back again.

                    Re: application server can't start

We have prepared a pre-release fix for this problem. It can be downloaded from http://downloads.alphasoftware.com/a5v9download/aex.zip.

To apply this, shut down Alpha Five, extract the files to your Alpha Five program folder, and then restart Alpha Five.

Look out guys - I've arrived! I've been fighting A5 Desktop for a year or so, so now I thought it was time to come and break the Server app!

Guess what... I couldn't even start the damn thing. Tried everything in this link; changing to Port 81 got me sorted. Many thanks

                        Re: application server can't start

I'm having issues as well. The application server will run fine if I start it within Alpha Five, but the application server will not run as a standalone.
This is running on Windows Server 2008, 32bit.
If I download the aex mentioned above, do I save that in the Application Server folder or Alpha Five V9 folder? I'm a little reluctant do install anything in the Alpha Five folder since it working and I need the site up.

                        Any thoughts?

ps: Lenny I can set up a login to my server if that will help any.

                        Thanks,

                          Re: application server can't start

                          Mike,

I wouldn't install that aex if I were you. That was relevant in June 08 as a pre-release, but we've had many updates since then.

If you want help on the board, you probably need to expand greatly on the problem you are having with your server.
