Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Images in body of e-mail?

    I am using Action Scripting (AS) generated code to send a letter as a PDF email attachment. This uses
    Code:
    :Letter.Send()
    which I cannot even find in the Help file (Report.Send() either). In any case, it does work, but I am wondering if there is any way to include an image (a jpg logo or whatever) in the body of the message. Seems like the body would have to be HTML.
    The AS generated message parameter is:

    Code:
    message_param = a5_eval_expression("This is my message!",local_variables())
    Anyone know if there is a way to get an image in the message, not as am attachment, but something that will display with the body of the message?

    I might add that the reason for this is that if the user tries to add the image file in Outlook when it opens up, the image only shows up as an attachment and if you set the message to be HTML in Outlook, the canned message "This is my message!" is wiped out.

      Ray,
      Whenever trying to find something in the help, make sure you take each word of a function (or what you think the function is), use it by itself, use it with a preceding period, a star *, an A5. , an A5_ ,an A5w or A5ws if for the Web, and if you still cannot find it, check out the similar functions with the links at the bottom of almost all the help pages. If no go then use somewhat the same type of search of the messageboard in case you are using an incorrect term.

      This is just the way I use the index portion of the help file and it rarely fails.

      In this case, prefacing send with a period does the job...brings up all the prefixes that go with the .send() function.

      Hopefully this will be of some use for you or others.
      Mike

        Re: Images in body of e-mail?

        Mike, thanks for the tip.

        Peter, thanks for the reference. Not sure yet but it does not look like I can do what I need with REPORT.SEND(). Should be able to do it with EMAIL_SMTP_SEND() though I suspect this may not bring up the default emial client and allow the user to make changes. We'll see. EMAIL_SEND2() won't work for the cases where I need to use the Windows default email client but it would work, I presume in cases where I use the A5 client. Trouble is my app has to be able to use both depending on which computer is used (I get the computer name to go one way or the other).

          Re: Images in body of e-mail?

          OK, EMAIL_SMTP_SEND() does not open the windows default email client, but I could maybe live with that if it would embed the image in the body of the message--but I can't get it to do that.

          All I get is a little image box where the image should be. Or I can get the image as an attachment, but that is not what I need.
          Code:
          dim pm as P
          dim ps as P

          if (email_smtp_open(ps, "mail.messagingengine.com", 25, "[email protected]", "mypassword"))
              pm.to = "[email protected]"
              pm.from = "[email protected]"
              pm.subject = "my subject"
          '    pm.message = "this is the message"
              pm.attachments = "C:\Test Logo.jpg"
              pm.html_message = <<%html%
              <html>
              <head>
              </head>
              <body>
              This is a message with an <img src="Test Logo.jpg" /><br>
              inline image.
              </body>
              </html>
              %html%
              email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
          end if
          email_smtp_close(ps)
          What am I doing wrong?

          Ray Lyons

          EDIT2: I tried adding a pm.lrelated = .T. line but that just resulted losing my message and it being replaced by "This body part will be downloaded on demand."

            Ray,

            I haven't yet looked at the script you are trying to use but instead attempted to send a letter as a pdf email attachment with an image inside the letter's message body using just action scripting....and sure seems to work in version 8 fine.

              Re: Images in body of e-mail?

              Thanks Mike, but as usual I was probably not clear enough. I need to have an image (a logo) within the body of the e-mail message, not the body of the message in the attachment. This should be possible using the A5 e-mail client whereas I do not think it is possible using any client that makes use of MAPI, as Outlook and most others do when interfacing with programs like A5.

              I think some version of the code I tried to use (see above) should work, but clearly something is wrong--presumably with my code. Actually, I would also much prefer that the A5 e-mail client would open up a window allowing the user to possibly add something to the message (like "Hi Mike") and then have to hit a send button. But before getting that far I need to get the image to appear in the message, not just as an attachment.

              Ray

              Edit: Any what the heck does it mean for my HTML message to be replaced with "This body part will be downloaded on demand" when I get the proper
              Code:
              pm.lrelated = .T.
              line in my code?

                Are you trying to do something like this?

                This is not a script (could be), just wanted to know what you mean.

                  Gabe,
                  Yes, but I do not care if it shows up anywhere before sending (as in your example). I would just want the message you typed, with the image down below, to show up when the recipient opened the email message. I guess I should add that the ultimate goal is to have have this work when sending a report or letter as a PDF attachment, but that is independent of having the logo image show up at the bottom of the text in the email message itself, not just as an attachment.

                    You mean like this??

                    Gabe did it the same way I do(I think). I prefer a bmp for this(had more success). This is in version 7, but works in v8 and v9 too.

                        I simply pushed the button to send the email from a form. Just drop it into a template within a5.

                        Is that not what you are trying to do? You head line was "Images in body of email"??

                          Well then, that's an easy one:

                          Give me a minute to put it in a script.

                            Here is what you do:
                            1-Create and save a template with the desired image
                            2-Write the script (or use Action Script if you wish) to send email using that template.
                            And that's all.

                              Using what? !!! The Windows default email client? The A5 email client? If all you are doing is opening up something like Outlook and using its tools to compose and send your message, that is not good enough. Ultimately, I need the user to click a button that will send a report or letter (for current record only) as a PDF attachment with a canned message (best if they can add to it, but that may be asking too much) AND at the end of the canned message have a logo file such that the message and the logo will be displayed when the recipient opens the email. ALL with the user doing nothing but clicking the button!

                              Except for the logo part, all this can be done with LETTER.SEND() or REPORT.SEND(). But with, say, Outlook, if the user adds his standard HTML signature with logo, the canned message is wiped out (because we are using MAPI here I presume) and the logo and the letter attachments are both received as attachments--the logo is not in the body of the email message (which is blank unless the user types something in). We can't use any HTML with LETTER.SEND() or REPORT.SEND() even when using the A5 email client. That's why I am looking at something like EMAIL_SMTP_SEND() which supposedly can use HTML and embedded images. Of course whatever I can get to work along these lines will require a lot more to get to where I want to go, but if I can't get the image in there, then there is no point in working on the rest of it.
