Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printer Override problem

    I am trying to override printer settings via Xbasic. First, I created an action script, which allowed me to select the options that I want, plus select the printer. Then I converted this to an Xbasic script, so I could read the correct syntax for the printer. Finally, I wrote a script similar to one that I did for another customer, which works properly.

    However, in this case I get an error message: "Driver for SHARP AR-M257 PCL6_T1printer not found". I have tried varying the syntax, but continue to get either this message or "Printer not configured", which I assume means that the syntax is so erroneous that it finds nothing.

    In the printer properties, the printer port is an IP address, and the description is SC TCP/IP Port. Could this have anything to do with the error? If so, what do I need to do to solve it?

    App is on my customer's F: drive, and the printer is connected to the server.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Re: Printer Override problem

    Good morning Bill,

    The error messages indicate that the printer has not been configured for use on a particular work station. Is the customer able to print to the same printer from notepad or word or something else?

    Just a thought.

      Yes, they can print normally from every workstation. I want to enable the override, because they have a multi-tray printer, which means that every time they print normally, they have to make several selections before they can print. I'm trying to save them time, as they print many times each day.

        Re: Printer Override problem

        Bill, were you able to print successfully using the action script prior to making any modifications to it? If so, it may be easier to get better assistance if you can provide us with the original action script code as well as your revised xbasic script. That may give us something more tangible to work with. It may even help if you can provide the script you have on another app that you said is similar and functioning. Point out the differences and why, this could go a long way in finding a possible resolution.

          Re: Printer Override problem

          Cheryl,

          First of all, thanks for taking the time on this.

          I did not try printing using an action script I used the action script to get the name of the printer as seen by Alpha.

          Here is the relevent portion of the Xbasic script for the customer where it works:

          ' Set the default printer as PRN0, and the override printer as PRN3; set the default and override trays

          prn0 = "HP LaserJet 3380 PCL 6 on Ne00:"
          prn3 = "HP LaserJet 2420 PCL 6 on Ne00:"

          tray0 = "Tray 1"
          tray3 = "Tray 3"

          ' Print INVOICE to the override printer

          dim opt3 as p
          opt3.defaultsource = tray3
          report.Printer_override(prn3,opt3)
          report.preview("invoice")

          ' Reset printer to default

          dim opt0 as p
          opt0.defaultsource = tray0
          report.printer_override(prn0,opt0)

          Note that I used the same format for the customer where it doesn't work, which is one reason this is so exasperating.

          One difference that I found is that for the first customer, in the properties for the printer on the Ports tab, the printer is printing to the LPT2 port and the port called hp3380, which is a Standard TCP/IP port.

          For the second customer, the only printer port is an IP address, and the description is SC TCP/IP Port (there is no LPT port assigned to the printer).

          This makes me think that even though Alpha has found the name of the printer, when it tries to send it back to Windows, it cannot be found.

            Hi Bill,

            Just taking a stab here, but have you tried the following:

            prn0 = "192.168.1.1 on IP_192.168.1.1" (whatever the ip address is)

              Bill,

              I am sure this is the same thing action scripting is giving you, but ?printer_select(), in interactive window, will give the printer names to use. Have you tried just overriding the printer and not the options?
              report.Printer_override(prn3)

              That at least insures that the problem is not with the options. I override quite a bit to local, network, parallel and USB printers without a problem, but I only have a way old app that overides printer options.

              Bill.

                Cheryl, thanks for the suggestion. I'll give that a try.

                Bill, I wasn't aware that ?printer_select() was available. I'll try that, too, just in case the action script is returning the wrong name. Thanks for the suggestion.
