Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: "Forbidden" in error log

Thank you, Steve, for the suggestions. I might have a little difficulty finding a buddy that's using Windows Server 2008, but I will at least try some of your other suggestions, and post the results.

I might add that this issue started about 24 hours after I registered the new server's IP address with our domain name's registrar. The same application worked fine on the old server, which was a VPS running Windows Server 2003.

The Word documents on the server are simply there as printer-friendly versions of some of the old articles on our site, made available for people to download. I now create PDFs for folks that want to print the articles. Other than that, I can't think of any unusual files that I have on the server.

      UPDATE

I modified my robots.txt file to disallow all robots, as Steve suggested, on August 6th. The effect was immediate and drastic. Prior to that, this issue was occurring an average of 5 times a day. Since the change was made, it has occurred only 6 times in 20 days. There was a 10-day period in which it did not occur at all.

However, I really don't want to exclude all robots from indexing my site, since I want people to be able to find us on Google, Yahoo, etc. I will probably do some experimenting soon in an attempt to determine if it's a particular robot that's causing the trouble, or if any of them will do it. I suspect that it's the latter, since it still happens occasionally, which makes me think that the spambots or other rogue bots that ignore the robots.txt file are the culprits now.

I also heard that Howard got AlwaysUp to work on your Win2008 machine.

You should create a sitemap for your site and submit to the major search engines. That will tell them what to searh for, and how often to look. You can't stop other bots unless you put up a IP blocker of some sort. I bet there is a IP list of non-friendly bots.

Sitemaps are essential for dynamic sites since you can tell the bot to enter in parameters just like they were a live user clicking the next page navigation and they will index those pages. Without a site map, it has no idea how to view those pages.

          Re: "Forbidden" in error log

I believe that I have found the source of problem. One of the files on my site contained no data. When I looked at it in Windows Explorer it indicated that the size was 0Kb. When testing I discovered that as soon as I would try to access the page with a browser, the error logging would go crazy, just like I described earlier. I uploaded the page again to replace the corrupted one, and I have not experienced the problem since. I changed my robots.txt file to allow robots again. If the problem returns, I'll let you know.
